Farmer Phil. This would actually be Phyllis, not Phil P-H-I-L.

So she had a comment, so it's all about clay soil remediation, and here's Phil.

We started a garden in heavy clay that was compacted from being used as a temporary parking lot.

Roto-tilled once to begin the garden.

We added two inches of compost, added 18 inches of shredded yard waste mulch

from our local landfill, and then planted squash and let

it sprawl over the mulch.

The second year, we added 6 inches of mulch and interplanted 50% corn and 50% sun hemp cover crop.

Beginning in the third year we raked compost from the decomposed mulch that had been added originally into the garden beds. Each year the

garden did well but by the third year and every year after our garden has been awesome.

Now we only mulch the pathways and do the sheet composting there.

Then we rake it onto the top of the garden beds,

and we never need fertilizer, we never rototill, we just plant and grow.

Now I'm bringing this to you, I know I've talked about clay soil remediation in the past,

but the reason I'm bringing this one to you

is because not only is it from a reader,

farmer fill, but it also is a practical timeline

to show you exactly what was done at exactly what time and how long it
