The Justice Department secretly obtained phone records from two members of Congress and 43 staffers,

including Cash Patel, President-elect Donald Trump's pick to lead the FBI.

That's according to a DOJ watchdog report, stating the records were seized during Trump's first term in sweeping leak investigations.

It found that DOJ investigators issued a broad

sweep based on who may have had access to sensitive information during the leak. Patel was a staffer

for the GOP-led House Intelligence Committee at the time. According to the report, prosecutors also

sought records from journalists at CNN, the Washington Post, and the New York Times.

But a key part of these investigations of these tactics, right, to seize these records,

is that the Justice Department required a non-disclosure order, meaning that the service

providers couldn't say that the records had been turned over.
