Spending time with Daniel Cload,

Professor Daniel Cload, whose new book is Kowala,

a natural history in an uncertain future.

Daniel has written several books,

one of which is the tragic figure in Bambi, Fire.

And we're going to mention that,

because that's part of the challenge the koala must now deal with.

Having survived 24 million years in a continent that was once part of Gandhuana, South America, Antarctica, Australia. It is now on its own in different parts of Australia

depending upon where the people are. We're going to talk about what they must have, which is

eucalyptus trees. Daniel tells me they're 8 to 900 species of eucalyptus

utilis. Did I write that down correctly, Daniel?

Yes, that's one of the species, but yeah, Eucalyptus is a very big group.

So it's the dominant form of a lot of Australian forests. The most widespread forests we have is

eucalyptus. But we tend to think of them all as one thing just eucalyptus, but in

actual fact they comprise eight to nine hundred different species and subspecies.

Kualas challenge is to eat eucalyptus leaves every day and make them nutritious.
