Summary
There’s a lot of talk about the monoamine hypothesis of Depression, which is the theory that a reduced level of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine in the central nervous system is what causes symptoms of depression, but is it the cause?
In this episode we’ll find out what the evidence is, and what treatments work based on that hypothesis, and how they relate to the drugs that are currently on the market to treat symptoms of Depression. In the next episode we'll go into more detail about the glutamatergic system and how these drugs interact with the brain, and potentially new treatments that could potentially reverse the negative side effects of some of the existing treatments.
