Summary

Wiring The Brain - Dr. Kevin Mitchell

Smithsonian Associates Art of Living, Inside Science Interview Series

What makes you the way you are? And what makes each of us different from everyone else? Kevin J. Mitchell, a leading neuroscientist and popular science blogger, traces human diversity and individual differences to their deepest level: in the wiring of our brains. Deftly guiding us through important new research, including his own ground-breaking work, he explains how variations in the way our brains develop before birth strongly influence our psychology and behavior throughout our lives, shaping our personality, intelligence, sexuality, and even the way we perceive the world.

Welcome to the Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzank and this is episode number 291.

As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living Inside Science Interview Series,

0:16.7

our guest today is Dr. Kevin Mitchell.

0:19.8

Dr. Kevin Mitchell is author of the new book, Inate, how the wiring of our brains shapes who we are.

0:27.0

Dr Kevin Mitchell is Associate Professor at the Sperfit Institute of Genetics and the Institute of Neuroscience at Trinity College in Dublin.

0:36.3

As a matter of fact, we'll be speaking with Dr Mitchell today from his offices in Ireland.

0:41.6

Dr Kevin Mitchell is a leading neuroscientist and will explain why your

0:45.9

personal traits are more innate than you think and Dr Mitchell's research indicates that we are

0:52.3

different as humans due to the way our brains

0:55.0

are wired before we are born. Just showing that a trait is genetic does not mean

0:59.6

that there are genes for that trait. Behavior arises from the function of the whole brain. With a few

1:04.9

exceptions it is very far removed from the molecular functions of specific genes. The genetic

1:10.2

variance that affect most psychological traits do so in indirect and

1:13.6

nonspecific ways. We shouldn't think of these as genes for

1:16.6

intelligence or genes for extroversion or genes for autism. It is mainly genetic

1:21.3

variation affecting brain development that underlies innate differences in psychological traits.

1:25.6

We are different from each other in large part because of the way our brains get wired before we are born.

1:31.5

That of course is our guest today Dr. Kevin Mitchell.

1:34.0

Dr. Mitchell will be discussing the brain, reviewing his research and
