So we are going to talk today.

The title of this podcast is, what is a functioning alcoholic?

And we're using that title because it's something we hear a lot.

Like a lot of the time we'll have clients who say, well, they'll explain their story and

they'll say, basically, I was a functioning alcoholic.

And we're using that word really as, because it fits our purpose,

but what we're really talking about is an alcohol use disorder, right?

Sure. Yeah. And the reason that I think we both decided to do this

is that we've never actually explained how clinicians sort of decide that somebody has this disorder or not. We've never actually gone,

well, these are a criteria that you need to meet in order to be able to be classified in that

area. We've never actually said that. We've talked about all the various aspects of it. We've

never actually said in my work, for instance, how do I as a clinician

decide that somebody has alcohol use disorder or whatever word you want to call it?
