Summary

Well it's finally happened. With the help of Ian Bradley and Mike Shank from The Lubber's Hole Podcast, The Cine-Files is finally digging in to the the film based on Steve's favorite series of books, Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey -Maturin series. Peter Weir does a masterful job capturing the living detail of a British Man of War in the Napoleonic era and Russel Crow and Paul Bettany brilliantly embody Stephen Maturin and Captain Jack Aubrey.

If you haven't seen this incredible film you can buy or stream it right here.

Hi, this is Steve.

0:02.3

In 1992, my good friend, Dave Draftford, recommended a series of books.

0:06.3

He knew I loved historical novels and had devoured Clevelle and Missionor, and of course,

0:11.3

the CS Forest or Hornblower series.

0:13.7

Now I had never actually heard of the Patrick O'Brien novels, but Dave told me the Chicago

0:18.0

Tribune had just named them the best historical novels ever written, and George Will, the New

0:23.4

York Times, felt that they should be on any of the lists of the greatest books of the

0:27.9

20th century.

0:29.4

So I picked up the first in the series, Mastering Commander, and worked my way through

0:33.2

its dense prose, subtle characters, and odd structure, and frankly, I didn't love it.

0:39.8

Still for some reason, the character stuck with me in a few years later, I tried it again,

0:44.0

and all I can say is that for some reason, the second time through, the book just opened

0:48.6

up for me.

0:49.9

Now almost 30 years later, I just finished what I think was my sixth journey through

0:54.7

these novels.

0:55.9

As I know I've said many times on the show, these are my favorite books.

0:59.0

They're not always easy, and they rarely give you what you want, but they have a depth

1:02.8

of character, complexity, wit, wisdom, not to mention absolutely thrilling action sequences

1:08.6

that are unlike anything I've ever seen in literature.

1:12.1

It was therefore with a bit of trepidation that I finally agreed to discuss Peter Wears

1:16.9

2003 adaptation of the novels on the cinephiles.

1:20.7

It's not that I don't think it's a good movie.
