It require more than goodwill, more than warm words, more than statements of intent to secure it.

But first, the government has insisted it has no intention of watering down its Hillsborough law.

The new law, which Labour promised in its manifesto, is designed to force public officials to be honest in the evidence they provide during inquiries into state-related disasters.

There'd be criminal sanctions for those who don't.

Campaigners also want victims and families to be given the same level of legal support as

public servants and institutions. But no bill has been published yet. Demands for the new law

have been spearheaded by supporters of the 97 Liverpool fans who died following a crowd crush

at Hillsborough Stadium during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final.

A non-party peer, Lord Alton, who used to be a Liverpool MP, remembered his constituent Andrew Devine.

He died in 2021, the 97th victim of Hillsborough, 32 years after his chest was crushed and he was deprived of oxygen.
