Hello, I'm Sean Curran, and this is today in Parliament from BBC Radio 4, for Monday the 1st of September,

when the Home Secretary said she would tighten the rules on allowing family members to join people

who've been granted asylum in the UK.

We do need to address the immediate pressures on local authorities

and the risks from criminal gangs using family reunion as a pull factor

to encourage more people onto dangerous boats.

Her Conservative opposite number says the changes won't solve the problem.

Tweaking, the family reunion rules are not enough.

Returning, maybe if we're lucky, 50 people a week to France is not going to be enough.

Also tonight, the Liberal Democrats expressed doubts about President Trump's approach to the war in Ukraine.

I still fear that Trump would prefer to secure a quick and easy carve-up of Ukraine rather

than were to secure a peace which provides justice for Ukraine. MPs and peers were back at Westminster

today after a summer of headlines dominated by rouse about immigration and asylum hotels.

Within hours of Parliament's return, the Home Secretary of Et Cooper made a statement to the Commons,

setting out plans to overhaul what she called an outdated and unfair asylum system.

She said the previous Conservative government had left the process in chaos

and told MPs that substantial reforms were needed. At the heart of these reforms will be a

complete overhaul of the appeals system. The biggest obstacle to reducing the size of the

asylum system and to ending hotel use. Because tens of thousands of people in asylum accommodation are currently waiting for appeals

and under the current system that figure is to grow.
