Hello there, I'm Alicia McCarthy, and this is today in Parliament for BBC Radio 4 for Thursday the 22nd of May,

where the Conservatives attack plans to release some prisoners a third of the way through their sentence.

She's OK. Her party is okay with criminals terrorising our streets and tormenting our country.

But the Justice Secretary says she's had to act because the Tories left prisons on the brink of collapse.

Did they make any decisions? No, they just decided to call an election instead.

They did a runner.

Also tonight, Conservative Fury,

as the government signs a £100 million a year deal

to hand over the Chegos Islands.

Voting against this deal does not make us traitors to this country.

It makes us patriots. And ministers astonished by

Tory criticism about the release of the teacher's pay deal. The brass neck of the opposition is

quite extraordinary. But first, the Justice Secretary has set out her latest plans to ease prison

overcrowding in England and Wales.

Shabana Mahmood said she'd accepted most of the recommendations made in a review by one of her conservative predecessors David Gork,

but she'd rejected the idea of early release for the most serious offenders.

The proposals could see eligible prisoners let out of jail

after serving one third of their sentence. A pilot scheme offering chemical castration to some

prisoners will also be expanded. Shabana Mahmood said the Conservatives had left a prison system

running out of space. If our prisons collapse, courts are forced to suspend trials.
