Summary
Today, I'm going to do something a little different I'm going to talk about why you should be going to events and conferences. Not the ones your job makes you attend but the ones where you can connect with like-minded people and know them better and expand your social and professional network. It's just incredible what it can do for you. I used to be extremely socially anxious and if you're one those people who have anxiety this is exactly what you need to do as a cognitive challenge for yourself to help you overcome.
Early in my career, I realized very quickly that to get ahead in my field I needed to go and learn from people in person. It's typically the same for whatever profession and industry you're in. It's important for you to get out there as event provide unique learning and career building opportunities that you just can't find anywhere else.
Here are 7 Reasons why you should attend an event:
- Meet experts & influencers
- Reduces stress and feel reenergized
- Experience the energy of like-minded Individuals
- Step out of your comfort zone
- Learning in a new space
- Networking opportunities
- Invest in yourself
If you feel intimidated by attending a live event, here are four (4) suggestions:
1-Find the right conference or event to attend
Choosing the right event is critical. Go to an event or conference that you're interested in.
2-Connect with someone before the event
It is always great to see a familiar face in an unfamiliar situation. If possible attend the event with someone you know.
3-Talk with vendors to "break the ice"
The vendors are there and eager to talk to you. They are friendly, open and talking to them is a great way to warm up.
4-Have fun
Events are fun and if you're looking for a good time there is plenty of that. If the thought of this overwhelms you and you struggle with finding the right ways to break into a conversation with people you don't know this is exactly what you need. The more conferences you attended the better you'll get.
I challenge you to do your research and take action to plan to attend an event for 2017. Select one that appeals to you and make the investment. You can make some amazing connections and also get to see a different perspective which can be incredibly transformative. Don't miss out on these opportunities!
