Anthony Demello. As I mentioned at the end of yesterday's episode, I first ran this clip maybe two

years ago, maybe a year and a half. And the response was unusual in a good way.

Lots of mentions on Instagram, lots of DMs.

I actually got text messages about this one.

And I almost never get a text message about the show.

And the reason why is because almost all of us struggle with this.

We struggle with this need, this addiction to the drug of approval, and the need to

avoid any kind of criticism.

And what really blows me away about this talk is that it was probably recorded in the late 1980s prior to the advent of social media.

So if Anthony Demello was still around, I wonder what he would say about how out of control this addiction to the drug of approval has gotten over the years.

Our lives are very public now, and we do our best to shape how we show up to the point

where we're not really being who we really are.

We have this need for people to like us.

We have this need to avoid the pain of approval. And the

solution that he presents today is to die to your need for people. And to understand that this

need for approval destroys your ability to truly love. And one of the greatest freedoms that anybody can

ever have is the freedom from needing people's approval. You just got to be who you are. We
