We've got Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence on the show today.

And this is a very fascinating talk.

At least I found it to be very fascinating.

There's so much public discussion about leveling the playing field, about how, you know, if you come from a certain socioeconomic background, how, you know, that can possibly hold you back from becoming as successful as you want to be.

And what he's going to present in this talk is how teaching children strategies for cognitive and emotional control has actually

been shown to predict financial success and health outcomes better than IQ and the socioeconomic

status of the family they grew up in, which again, to me, is absolutely

fascinating.

The reason I'm worried about children is that the brain is the last organ of the body to become

anatomically mature.

It starts growing from birth, and it actually doesn't finish until the mid-20s.

During that time, the principle of neuroplasticity is extremely important.

Neuropasticity says that repeated experiences shape the brain.

Use it or lose it is another way of saying it.

If a child has an experience, for example, of empathy and another experience of empathy, the circuitry for empathy grows.

If a child has the experience of paying full attention and ignoring distractors, which is what we just did, the connectivity for that

circuitry grows. And children need this in order for their brains to develop well. When we see a child
