A young man journeyed west, hoping to strike it rich during the California Gold Rush.

At first, he was full of energy and certainty that his fortune was just around the corner.

But his enthusiasm faded when day after day, he dipped his pan into the river and pulled out dull rocks instead of dazzling golden nuggets.

At the end of an especially long hot day, the young miner vented his frustrations to an elderly prospector.

Why did I come all this way? There is no gold in this river.

The wise old man pointed at the piles of rocks that the young man had tossed aside and said,

there's gold right there, son. You're just not seeing it.

He then cracked open a rock and revealed a few glittering particles of gold.

But the young man wasn't convinced. I didn't come all this way for a few tiny flecks of gold.

He pointed to the heavy pouch that was hanging from the miner's belt.

You found big golden nuggets. That's what I want to find.

The old miner smiled knowingly,

ah, but again you're not seen clearly.

He opened his pouch and the young man was amazed to see that the weight of the pouch was not from large nuggets.

But instead from the accumulation of hundreds of small flecks of gold.
