I want you to think back to when you were a kid. Back to when the darkness terrified you.

For me, it was when spring, summer, fall, the ball got away from us in the backyard.

All day long, we'd be playing basketball, baseball, playing catch with the football,

wouldn't matter, and the ball would get over our head, and we'd go get it.

And at some point it would happen once the sun went down.

And to my recollection, my memory as a kid is that our driveway led up to our detached garage

and we had this big, long expanse behind it where the light from the porch didn't reach.

And there were bushes and trees back there behind the garage.

And it was dark and there were monsters in there.

And so the ball would get away and my brother and I would look at each other and say

touched it last that was always the rule whoever touched it last had to get it so if you threw

a bad pass it was on you to go get it and if you touched it the pass was catchable if you got

a finger on it it was on you to go get it.

And so you would do this thing where one kid would start easing towards the porch

And as soon as your feet reached the point where it was too dark,
