Hello, I'm Alicia McCarthy, and this is today in Parliament from BBC Radio 4 for Tuesday the 20th of January,

where after President Trump's attack on the government's Chegos Islands deal,

the Tory say ministers should

rip up the treaty. When the President of the United States now raises concerns, we should

listen to those concerns. But the government insists it's secured the future of the military

base in Diego Garcia. We will of course have discussions with the administration in the coming

days to remind them of the

strength of this deal and how it secures the base. Also on this program, the government's accused of

appeasing China after approving plans for a mega embassy in London. The embassy does not clean

Chinese officials of their human rights abuses. It is shocking that China has placed bounties on the heads

of democracy activists from Hong Kong who live in the UK. And a Conservative former Defence Secretary

shares some tips from his time in government. The twirps and Numberkan can do all what they

usually do, the spinning around and making things life difficult for ministers, as you know.

So I just got on and did my job.

But first, the Conservatives have called on the government to scrap what they've called

the shameful treaty which hands sovereignty of the Chegos Islands to Mauritius.

The demand came hours after US President Donald Trump used social media to describe the deal as an act of

great stupidity months after he endorsed the move. The UK signed an agreement last year under which

it would lease back the UK-US military base on the largest of the Indian Ocean Islands, Diego

Garcia, for 99 years, at a cost of around £100 million a year.
