Early one morning several months ago, I woke up to a strange hissing sound in my room that

grew louder and louder.

When I opened my eyes, I saw billows of dark smoke

pouring up over the side of my bed.

My daughter Sally had climbed into bed with me at some point in the night,

so she was right next to me and she woke up to the sound as well.

She started screaming and clinging to me in fear.

I was so disoriented from sleep and I could not figure out what was going on.

Was something in my room on fire?

Was there a vent on that side of the bed that was letting and smoke from outside?

I grabbed Sally and ran from the room, yelling for my husband, who was in the shower, the poor man.
