Summary

PSA: You Don’t Have to Go to France to Study Fragrance!!In fact, there’s an educational, state-of-the-art fragrance lab right in NYC—at FIT, home to the country’s only collegiate Cosmetics & Fragrance Marketing program. Today’s guest, Virginia Bonofiglio, is the Associate Chairperson (and professor) leading it all.

Having held roles in just about every position in this industry over the span of her forty-plus year-long fragrance career (with many accolades and awards along the way), Virginia brings a rare real-world perspective to her classroom.

Today we chat about her own serendipitous path to perfumery, she shares what students learn in the program, the wide range of careers in fragrance, and how you, yes you, can find your perfect path in this industry.

Welcome to the perfume room. My send of the day today is ex-Nahilo, Sontal calling, and this is literally why perfume is so fun. This scent is heavy in my rotation. You know this. It's up there as one of my signature sense easily. I wear it often. But today I am getting something entirely new from it, something I have never perceived before. Today is the first time that the sandal wood accord that's in this perfume is really giving me specifically a strong javanol nuance. Now, I don't know if there's

0:40.4

javanol in here or maybe some other molecule that's comparable if you're listening to this and you do

0:45.2

know on record. Feel free to DM or off the record. Just tell me. I'm curious. But javanol

0:50.5

is a synthetic sandalwood molecule. And if you have smelled eccentric molecules

0:55.5

Molecule O4, that's the stuff. And I also posit, without confirmation, that Javanol is also

1:02.5

present in sense like Terr Jermez and Dias and Degas, I don't know what, because both of those

1:08.4

perfumes give me that very specific drywood shavings buzzing light bulb

1:14.0

combined with day old piss on concrete kind of smell that i know as javanol javanol kind of smells if

1:23.2

that visual wasn't helpful enough javanol kind of smells like taking a stroll on the lowery

1:27.9

side on a Sunday morning if you're catching my drift. Pee. But like sophisticated woody pee.

1:35.7

You know what I mean? Does that resonate with you? Now this is not coming up strong for me

1:40.2

in Sontal Calling. I still think ultimately Sontal Calling is like this beautiful sort of like frothy

1:44.1

lactic, Iris sandalwood scent. But it's the first time that I'm getting that slight nuance. And you know what? I don't hate it. I really don't. I'm wearing this one layered with two other perfumes. I'm wearing it with the maker lover, which is also another stunning, warm, musky sandalwood,

2:01.7

but that one goes distinctly sort of like fig sandalwood to my nose,

2:04.9

as well as Aloria, gentle shower, which adds a nice, like, spicy, aromatic greenness to the whole ensemble.

2:12.7

And I say layered, but to clarify what layering has looked like for me recently could really more accurately

2:19.1

be described as accenting. I don't layer, I accent. And what I mean by that is I pick one fragrance

2:26.6

as my core fragrance. Think of this fragrance like a couch. Then any other accent that I add is

2:33.0

simply functioning as my accent pillow. So

2:35.7

Santal calling is my couch. It's on my wrist, my arms, my neck. And then two spurs of lover

2:40.6

on the front of my shirt, two sprays of gentle shower on the back. And voila, I smell good.

2:48.6

Before we get to today's episode, I do want to announce the Smell Club theme for August.
