Hey, welcome to Job with Julie. On today's episode, I wanted to share with you a conversation I had with Dr. Mark Wigneris. Mark is a research professor of sociology at the University of Texas and Austin.

And Mark's specialty is he studies trends in marriage and relationship and sexuality and then compiles that information in books and books and journals articles and resources that help

Mark just recently had an article published in the Wall Street Journal talking about

One thing I learned from you that made total sense when I read it, but I have to admit

I had to read it a few times before I really got it, was this idea that sexual decisions

don't happen in a vacuum, that there's an economy of sexuality. So can you describe to a layperson what that

actually means? Yeah, and your listeners might not like it. It's just, I can't help that.

But it's true. We don't like a lot of what we hear. You can draw a little bit of an analogy from

real estate.

There are some neighborhoods in which, you know, the price is much lower.

There's, yeah, I could say I want to sell my house for a million dollars, but, you know, if all my neighbors are only selling it for $200,000, like, it, it matters what other people are doing when it comes to real estate. And in the

domain of sexual relationships, it matters what other people around you are doing. The idea that

a couple could have an illicit liaison only for a night and nobody would ever know about it is pretty

much fiction not because somebody would talk about it but because what has happened is that

the sex was priced very cheaply and and and to him that you know that affects how he perceives the next person who he might want to have a relationship with.
