The word Ba' Ali, my husband, is heard less and less, at least in the state of Tel Aviv.

Instead, we have Ben Hazug, Bat-Hazug.

Zug is a couple, a pair.

Ben-Zug, literally a masculine member of the couple, and

Bat Zug, a female member of the couple.

Today Ben Zug and Bat Zug are the PC terms for a partner. This also solves issues of gayness because everybody can say

Benazugshali or Bathagshali. The other day I spoke with a neighbor of mine who is Arab and gay. We spoke Arabic, but when

he mentioned his boyfriend, he used the word Benzug in Hebrew, because in Arabic it's even more complicated.

I went with my partner, half Arabic, half Hebrew sentence.

I plan to dedicate a whole episode to the Arabic spoken here in Israel.

Note that Ben Zugzug is Smihut compound noun, two nouns together, hence the ha comes before

the second word Ben Hazug, but Hazug, likehasephur.

But in colloquial Hebrew, you'll hear people saying,

ha-bat zugshali, ha-ben-zugshali many times. Bali whoa whobed yuk bishvili

balehobed yu bishvili

baleh

who bed yuk my husband is just right for me, sings Maya Farh Khan.

Bahal husband started to feel out of date in the 80s because it also means owner and many women did not feel like being owned by men, but the debate is much older.

My great aunt, Ada Shrtok, wrote letters in Tel Aviv in 1922 where she said the idea of getting married to her boyfriend
