Welcome to the Feminine Podcast. This is Nancy Wilson. Thanks so much for joining me today.

0:11.0

Today I'd like to talk with you about temptation. So we're going to look at first Corinthians 10, 11 through 13.

0:19.0

And where we pick up in this letter to the Corinthians, Paul has been talking about the Israelites in the wilderness

0:27.0

and their idolatry while Moses was on the mountain. And so Paul is cautioning us to not think we are exceptions.

0:37.0

Because in verse 6 he says, now these things were our examples. So he's going to list five things they did that we should not imitate.

0:49.0

And so here they are. Let's see, lusting after evil things, idolatry, fornication.

0:59.0

So we shouldn't lust after evil things like they lusted. Neither be idolaters, as were some of them, as it is written,

1:09.0

the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.

1:15.0

Neither let us commit fornication. There's the third thing, as some of them committed and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

1:24.0

Then fourth, neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted and were destroyed of serpents. And fifth, neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured and were destroyed of the destroyer.

1:39.0

Alright, so these five things, idolaters sitting down to eat and drink and rising up to play, fornication, tempting Christ, murmuring, then he repeats what he said in verse 6.

Now all these things happened to them as examples and they were written for our admonition upon whom the ins of the ages have come.

2:05.0

2:15.0

But an admonition is a caution, a warning. So we want to pay attention to what happened to these rides. This is another good reason to be reading our Old Testament, right?

2:26.0

So what happened to them should teach us to be very careful and wise. And then in verse 12, the famous verse, therefore let him who thinks he stands, take heed, lest he fall.

2:40.0

So here is a warning against arrogance and pride of thinking we have the Christian life dialed in no problem. So often when we fall into sin, when we slip into sin,

2:53.0

we've just been thinking we can handle it. But after all these warnings, here's the comfort for those who are aware of temptation and how dangerous it is in verse 13.

3:03.0

No temptation has overtaken you, except such as common to man. But God is faithful who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able.

3:13.0

But with the temptation will also make the way of escape that you may be able to bear it. This is great comfort and just look at all the comfort in this verse.

3:24.0

Your temptations are common. They are what my husband calls off the rack Walmart problems. That's what your temptations are.

3:33.0

Sometimes pride is camouflaged as humility when we think our own problems are designer problems. No one else in history has had this hard or has had this set of circumstances or these temptations.

3:48.0

But notice your temptation is just a common one. It's common to man. And there should be something very comforting in that.
