Summary

I'm so honored to host Professor Martha S Jones, author and researcher at Johns Hopkins, to talk about the history of the 19th Amendment, and how the stories we tell ourselves about our families and our histories shape the way we move through the world. It's an important conversation to have - especially in this moment when we're remembering the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment to the US Constitution. If you're anything like me, you grew up believing that this amendment gave women the right to vote, but the truth is much more complicated. I hope you'll join Professor Jones and I as we dive into the legacy of Black suffragettes and the power each of us wield as guardians of our own stories. If you enjoyed this conversation as much as I did then you MUST go follow Professor Jones on Instagram: instagram.com/marthasjones/ AND pre-order her latest book VANGUARD here -> https://bookshop.org/books/vanguard-how-black-women-broke-barriers-won-the-vote-and-insisted-on-equality-for-all/9781541618619 Remember listeners: your voice matters because YOU matter. You can check if you're registered to vote by searching your state online, or by clicking here -> https://www.vote.org/am-i-registered-to-vote/ -- Look: we've all either been through it, are currently going through it, or will go through it. That's just how life is: once you think you've got it all figured out, it hits you with something you never saw coming. Grief? Check. Divorce? Check. Global pandemic? Uh, CHECK! That's why I wrote a new book all about conquering hard things and coming out the other side a better, stronger you. It's called Didn't See That Coming, and it's available for pre-order here: https://bit.ly/dstcrise The RISE App is finally HERE y'all and it's got everything you could ever want in a health and wellness app. Fully customizable workouts? Hey guys, welcome to another episode of the podcast.

I'm so grateful that you could join me.

And I have to tell you, this is one of my favorite interviews I have done in a really long

0:14.1

time.

0:15.1

Partially because I am a super history nerd and I love learning about any kind of history,

0:23.2

but also because I think this is an incredibly important conversation to have, especially right

0:28.8

now.

0:29.8

So let me tell you where the idea for today's episode came from.

0:34.2

I am aware, like maybe most of you who are women in America, that August marks the 100th anniversary

0:43.2

of the 19th Amendment.

0:45.2

That was the amendment that gave women the right to vote in America.

0:50.2

Only it didn't totally.

0:52.5

So when I was a little girl, I was taught that there were the suffragettes like Susan

0:58.7

B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton and they fought so hard and long and earned the

1:05.0

right for every woman to vote.

1:08.0

And what I understand now is that the 19th Amendment actually had some very specific wording

1:15.6

that didn't necessarily guarantee any woman the right to vote and certainly alienated

1:21.6

any woman who wasn't white.

1:24.6

And so my conversation today is with Professor Martha Jones.

1:30.0

Her work is something that I came across as I was studying this for myself between the

1:34.9

articles that she's written and her incredible books.

1:38.3

She has so much wisdom to share.
