| 0:26.0 | Hi, I'm Michael Hyatt. And I'm Megan Hyatt Miller. And this is lead to win our weekly podcast to help you win at work and succeed at life. |
| 0:35.0 | And today we're going to be talking about your growth and success will be determined by your capacity for discomfort and by you, I mean all of us. |
| 0:45.0 | This is something that I feel like we don't talk about enough in leadership and consequently a lot of leaders come into leadership with misaligned expectations to what it's really going to be like. |
| 0:59.0 | So let me give you a little story as an example. So a few years ago, one of my direct reports came to me and she was having a problem with one of her direct reports she needed to do some performance coaching. |
| 1:11.0 | And she was fairly new to leadership and so she hadn't had a lot of these conversations yet. And she was really nervous about it. |
| 1:18.0 | You know, she was asking for advice, she was making talking points, all that kind of stuff. And when it came down to it, you know, she was just commenting to me on the fact that, you know, basically she was shaken in her boots and I was like, well, of course. |
| 1:32.0 | And she looked at me and she was like, what do you mean? Of course, like, are you telling me that, like, this is normal. And I'm like, it's absolutely normal. In fact, if it's ever not normal, then something's probably wrong, you know, your empathy meter is kind of off track. |
| 1:46.0 | And the reason is, is because there is so much vulnerability that is a part of leadership, whenever you're going to do something vulnerable, which we're going to get into these things that cause us to feel uncomfortable. |
| 1:58.0 | We experience all those emotions, we experience doubt, we experience uncertainty, all those feelings that we talk about, we talk about things like goal setting that we're familiar with, but we expect somehow magically when we're in a leadership situation that if we are quote unquote the leader, that we're just going to feel confident all the time. |
| 2:16.0 | And in fact, that's not the truth at all. And so I was sharing with her, you know, the good news is over time you will build confidence in some of these areas where you feel really uncomfortable right now. |
| 2:26.0 | But you're probably not going to feel uncomfortable. And dad, we were talking about this over lunch, a little bit, and you said, yeah, the thing that you're going to feel is confident that you're going to survive, not confident that it's going to be easy, right. |
| 2:37.0 | And so I think what this director of port of mine found is that, you know, she was nervous on the front end, she went through the situation. And on the back end, she was more confident and more importantly, she knew that she had grown because the next time this comes up, she had, you know, the ability to look back and say, I've done this before now. |
| 2:55.0 | And I can move forward with a little bit of confidence, but also with the expectation that it's probably going to be uncomfortable. |
| 3:01.0 | Well, I have to say, I don't like this part of leadership. |
| 3:04.0 | I know me neither. |
| 3:06.0 | It's my least favorite part of it. In fact, I keep thinking when I say a lot of sounds stupid, but when I think about it, it makes sense. |
| 3:13.0 | But I keep thinking I'm going to get to this point, my leadership, wherever they will be so familiar, that everything's comfortable. |
| 3:20.0 | Right. |
| 3:21.0 | And I remember Dan Sullivan talking about one time, how entrepreneurs have to be worried this because because, you know, we take risk to succeed. |
