And now we pause having celebrated the coming of the Holy Spirit to focus upon the mystery of the Holy Trinity, the Catholic faith, the universal faith, is this that we worship one God in Trinity and Trinity in unity, neither confusing the persons nor dividing the substance.

And our existence as men and women created by God, I think it's so important to understand that we are created in the image and likeness of the Holy Trinity, the eternal God of love,

so that the character of our human existence as men and women in marriage and in family has a lovely trinitarian shape to it.

So we can't really understand anything about ourselves unless we understand and focus upon how God has revealed Himself to us as the one God who is nonetheless three persons.

And to the extent that any of us are Christians, there is only one Christian faith or Catholic faith or universal faith that is born in us from above by the Holy Spirit.

And that is the faith that confesses that there is one God in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

In the Athanasian Creed, you have a defense and a confession of the Trinity and of the deity of each of the persons of the Godhead, and there are two focal points to the Athanasian Creed.

The first focal point in the first 25 lines are the confession of the Holy Trinity, this careful distinction where it says the Father is one person, the Son is another, the Holy Spirit is another.

But the Godhead of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit is one, the glory equal, the majesty, co-eternal, such as the Father is such is the Son and such is the Holy Spirit.

So they share the divine nature so that the Father is uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated, the Father infinite, the Son infinite, the Holy Spirit infinite.

The Father eternal, the Son eternal, the Holy Spirit eternal, and yet there are not three eternals but one eternal and so forth.

So the first half of the Athanasian Creed, those first 25 lines, extoll the confession of the Holy Trinity, and then lines 26 through the end, the confession of the incarnation of the Son of God, the second person of the Holy Trinity.

It is also necessary for everlasting salvation that one faithfully believe the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
