Summary

If you are a teacher then the chances that you had to undergo some form of unit planning in college is very high. However, we have to know! Have you actually used your skills from college to plan out a unit? We’d assume that the percentage of teachers who are willing to create 120 page planned units is very small. The majority of the (little) time we have as teachers is spent creating those detailed lessons that we use week to week.  Only, we recognize that unit plans can save us a LOT of time! Afterall, isn’t it just batch planning at it’s finest? This is why we thought it was important to include an entire episode on how to develop effective unit plans. We’ll take you from the college unit planning experience to our TOP Teacher recommendations.  In this episode you will hear:  Our step-by-step process for developing your unit plans.  Why creating a lesson progression will help to define your individual lessons.  How embedding your lesson structure will save you time and energy.  Our quick tips for making this process more efficient and less stressful! Check out these additional episodes: 140: The ONE Thing Holding Your Lesson Planning Back 141: Lesson Planning 101: How to Plan MORE Lessons in LESS Time 143: Plan Your Entire School Year In ONE Day (Yes, really!) Check out our new Planner Inserts!   SUBMIT YOUR TIME SUCKING HURDLE! We want to know what is sucking up all of your time either as a teacher or just a person. Well, hello there, top teachers. We are your hosts, Michelle Emerson and Bridget Spackman,

0:05.9

and we are here to make your life easier by helping you master your time, organization, and

0:10.4

productivity as a teacher. This episode has been highly, I cannot emphasize that word enough,

0:17.3

highly requested by our top teachers. And I think that's because this is an area that

0:22.7

doesn't get taught much, and that is unit planning. Teachers learn all about lesson planning

0:28.7

in college, but unit planning, it's almost like it's expected that teachers just know how to do it

0:34.1

and they don't receive any real guidance on it. So don't worry, we've got you.

0:38.7

In today's episode, we are breaking down unit planning, which truly is the secret to maximizing

0:44.7

your planning time. But first, we're going to listen to a TSAH from a top teacher. This top teacher

0:50.9

says, my time-sucking hurdle is finding lesson plans for the next unit,

0:55.8

but I always spend hours trying to find lessons. And when I do find lesson plans, I have spent my

1:02.9

entire night trying to find lessons. I am confident that you have tips for me. And by the way,

1:09.2

I love your podcast. Well, thank you so much. That's very sweet.

1:14.0

And yes, I do think trying to find lessons can be very difficult, but it's easier when you know what

1:21.1

you're looking for, right? It's just like when you go grocery shopping, look, y'all know I love a good

1:25.8

analogy. If you go into the grocery

1:28.0

store without a plan, like you haven't mapped out what meals you're going to have that week,

1:31.9

you don't have a grocery list, you're going to spend all day in there and you're going to come

1:35.5

out with Oreos and other things that you did not need to purchase. However, when you sit down

1:41.4

and you map out your meals for the week, you create a grocery list,

1:45.1

you can go in, get what you need, and get out much more quickly. So I think this episode where

1:51.2

we're going to break down unit planning is going to be super helpful. Yeah, I do completely agree
