Summary

You better gird your loins because we are taking lesson planning to a WHOLE other level. Lesson planning is one of the biggest hurdles for teachers all around the world, but  we know that as TOP teachers, being proactive is a great way to reduce our stress and help us tackle our to-do list well in advance. But how do we go about being proactive with our lesson plans? The answer to this question is to plan out your ENTIRE school year in one day! We’ve all heard the term scope and sequence. This is something that many schools have adopted as their form of a curriculum map. However, a scope and sequence isn’t a detailed lesson plan. The purpose is to structure your year so that you can anticipate when to begin and end units based on other events that are occurring during the school year. How many times have you planned a lesson, only to have your plans changed because you forgot to account for an assembly, fundraiser, or field trip?  We want to take you step by step to develop the perfect scope and sequence for this school year. This will help you create a flow to the year, allow you to anticipate beusy weeks and more importantly hit all the standards.  In this episode you will hear: The step by step approach we use to create a scope and sequence.  The key ingredient to incorporate into your scope and sequence.  Why adding in buffer dates will help to save your instruction.  Why we work backwards when planning.  Our quick tips for making this process easier.  Check out our new Planner Inserts! Well, hello there, top teachers. We are your host, Bridget Spackman and Michelle Emerson, and we are here to make your life easier by helping you master your time, organization, and productivity as a teacher.

0:12.5

How would you like it if you could come into your classroom each day knowing exactly what you were teaching and where you were going next. You would feel pretty good about that,

0:21.6

right? We want to share our strategies for planning out your entire year in only one day. So that way,

0:28.6

you can feel less frazzled and more prepared. I would just like to point out. Okay. Why did you

0:34.2

have to do that? I was trying to ignore it, Michelle. So you already know exactly where I'm going. I do. Bridget and I outline these episodes just in Google Docs. And we end up having a lot of typos because it's just something for us to reference during the episodes when we're recording. And instead of saying, knowing exactly what you were teaching, it says, ecstasy.

And I was like, is she going to say it or is she going to know what she meant and say exactly?

0:59.5

But you pulled through.

1:00.7

I'm very proud of you.

1:01.9

Okay.

1:02.3

First, let's hear a TSA from Justine.

1:07.1

Justine's TSA is not having double copies of my curriculum books.

1:11.6

I need them to lesson plan, so I end up hauling them home often.

1:16.6

Ooh, I have to tell you, Justine, stop taking your work home.

1:21.6

Like as much as possible, don't take those curriculum books home.

1:25.6

For me, what I have always done when it comes to any form

1:30.3

of curriculum book is that I spend the time reviewing what it is that it's wanting me to do, but then I embed that into my lesson plans.

1:38.3

And I just do more of a short synopsis. Now, I can understand the need for wanting to take it. For me, it's like

1:44.8

that security blanket, right? I want to keep something with me so that I know exactly what I need

1:48.9

to do and what if I need to plan? I've been there, Justine. I've done that. But the whole goal here

1:55.1

is that we want to start helping you to create the separation between work and your home life. And your home life is meant for you

2:02.7

to give back to you, to spend time with friends, to spend time with family, to spend time doing the

2:07.6

things that you love. So while you might think that that's a TSA, not having those double copies,
