Summary
In today's episode of Mailbox Monday we go over: why being shredded isn't ideal, the worst personal trainer story, cardio & muscle gain, & so much more. This is a jam packed episode with lots of great questions!
Josh quote: "no one cares about what you did yesterday, it's about what you can do today"
Kyle quote: "your fitness journey is a marathon, not a sprint"
1. Why do I feel so much worse and weak when I shred down?
2. What are some workout ideas for firefighters?
3. Do you sacrifice cardio/endurance if you try to gain more muscle? I've been incorporating more strength training and it seems like my cardio stamina has really declined. I have gained a few pounds which I know can make a little difference, but it seems like I also experience more lactic acid buildup doing my HIIT exercises and can't go as long and hard as I used to?
4. When I squat, my knees tend to buckle in on the way up. I've dropped the weight slightly to a weight that doesn't cause me to do that and have been working on 5x5 at that weight, making sure I push my knees out on the way up. But it seems that every time I try to increase the weight, my knees still buckle in. Any tips on how to increase the weight while maintaining good form? I don't want to stay at the same weight.
5. What are your tips for starting a business with a friend?
6. Josh, what ever happened to that weighted blanket you got?
7. What are your thoughts on taking meds and working out? (paraceta, ibup, pseu)
8. How do I break up with my PT without hurting his feelings?

| 0:16.7 | So someone, I was, I forget where I was anyways, was buying something or doing something. And the lady goes, wow, you have such a deep voice for such an innocent face. And I'm like, oh, cool, thanks. I guess. I didn't realize. So that's pretty funny. But funny story that we have to mention that. Yeah.'m feeling a little little bit of a head cold today |
| 0:38.1 | so Kyle might be talking a little more than usual i don't want to you know sound too uh sickly here |
| 0:43.8 | on the podcast but we're still out here getting it done and i think that's a perfect transition |
| 0:48.3 | into our uh quote to the day so for my quote for today um i'm going to go ahead and say that no one cares what you did yesterday. It's about what you can do today. So there's just a thought like kind of, it's not so much a quote, but it's something that provoked thought for me from seeing it in a video. And, you know, a lot of people say, oh, what are your all-time PR is for powerlifting? and I'll tell people like, yeah, I've done, you know, 614 deadlift, 545 squat, you know, and 3, 65 bench. And then people say, oh, that's amazing, you know. And even for me now that we're doing this competition and you can find that on our YouTube Colossus Fitness, it's kind of fun that we're doing it again. And now instead of just marking on my best days yesterday, I really want to be even stronger than that and do even better now and have my best days ahead of me and continue to get stronger and progress. And at the end of the day, like if you're someone who used to be an amazing shape and so many people come are, you know, in their 40s or 50s and they'll say, |
| 1:45.1 | wow, enjoy that body. |
| 1:46.4 | Well, you can because life will hit you and you can't have it. I used to look like that too. And, you know, like there's obviously truth. You know, obviously I'll have more challenges in my life and things overcome to maintain where I'm at. But at the end of the day, I think so many people just cling on to their glory days and they just think the best times are behind them instead of thinking, hey, the best times are |
| 2:04.6 | in front of me, I can empower myself. I can hustle towards that. So I love that. That brings me into like I was having a conversation with the client, Mike Stokes. He's an in-person client. And, a lot of his friends that come into his shop and kind of uh you know just go talk to him |
| 2:18.6 | they talk about what they've done in the past because he's looking jack oh i used and, you know, a lot of his friends that come into his shop and kind of, you know, just go talk to him. |
| 2:33.5 | They talk about what they've done in the past because he's looking Jack. Oh, I used to do that. And he's like, oh, yeah, I did that yesterday. Like just with like, you know, 475 pound deadlift or 400 pound squat. And I think it's just so cool that like, you know, you're able to do that in the current moments. And obviously you're not always going to be able to do that, |
| 2:35.9 | but it kind of brings me into my actual quote, |
| 2:35.9 | which is your fitness journey is a marathon. you're able to do that in the current moments. And obviously you're not always going to be able to do that, but it kind of brings me into my actual quote, |
| 2:53.3 | which is your fitness journey is a marathon, not a sprint. So a lot of the times, like you kind of have to ask yourself whether, like I feel like a lot of people just look at it as like a little quick, you know, you know, couple of day, a couple week, couple months, you know obviously a sprint will last what maybe 10 or 20 seconds, whereas a marathon is much longer, but it's something to think about, like are the habits that you're doing within your fitness journey, are your goals, are they leading you to like that lifelong, you know, marathon? And a lot of times I think people will honestly say no. this is just something to think about like I can |
| 3:08.1 | truthfully say and I'll always go back to a quote that Josh had said you know he wants to be able to |
| 3:12.0 | squat when he's 70 and and it's just something to kind of always think about and I really love this |
| 3:17.2 | because I always want to be safe I always want to be working out lifting some heavy weights and |
