know that I am a student and an advocate of expository or expositional preaching.

I've been a student of expositional preaching literally since the week I turned 18 years old.

I was already pastoring my first church in Los Angeles at that time,

and our church was having a week-long revival meeting.

The guest speaker was Jerome Kirby,

Blessed Memory, pastored in Detroit, Michigan. And one night, early that week,

after the service as we were taking him back to his room, he asked me to take him to hear

E.K. Bailey. I didn't know who E.K. Bailey was, and I had never heard E.K. Bailey preach before, much less did I know

that he was in town preaching that very week. But we went, and that service changed my life. I had

read about expository preaching. I think I was already already had a fundamental understanding

of it and generally agreed with what I was learning about it, but I had not really in my context

seen it put into practice. And that day, hearing E.K. Bailey preach. I left, I didn't even know to call it expository preaching.

I just left saying that dude just explained the text. He just explained the text. That was my way of describing what I had just experienced.

I also said as we were leaving that day that I wanted to commit my life to doing what I had just
