Good morning and welcome to Kid News. I'm Tori. Today is Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

And we begin with Election Day 2018, finally here.

Hopefully, all the eligible voters in your life that would be

any American citizen who is at least 18 years old will head to the polls today or

maybe they've already voted and if so they are not alone in fact well over 30 million Americans

voted early meaning they filled out their ballots at home and then mailed them in and

that's broken records in a lot of states. Typically voting is really low

when there's not a presidential race. In the last midterm election voter

turnout was only 36%. This year it's expected to be near 50%.

You may be wondering why Election Day in the US is held in early November.

When our country was first formed, most people were farmers.

November made sense to hold elections for them,

since it was after the harvest, but before the harsh winter weather arrived.

And Tuesday worked well in the early days of our nation,

since people had to travel a long distance to cast their ballots.

They wouldn't want to miss out on the Sunday Sabbath, so the thought was they could travel on a Monday and vote on a Tuesday.

And technically election day is now held on the first

Tuesday after the first Monday of November so it will never fall on November 1st, which as we

mentioned on Kid News last week is the Christian Holy Day known as All Saints Day.

Winter is fast approaching and that means another flu you won't get a
