Summary

Sofie talks to cartoonist, creator of ‘The Bechdel Test’ and author of Fun Home Alison Bechdel about writing an auto-biographical book that turned into a play, letting other people take creative control, dealing with her father's suicide, being gay, the different concerns that come with getting older, being followed by a coming-of-age story when definitely of age, finding a young queer audience, The Bechdel Test in a changing cultural stew, identity, family secrets, how drawing memories can change the way you remember them and a meditation on mortality.

You know, anyone can make up a story about a young lesbian who comes out and finds out that

0:06.2

her dad is gay and then he kills himself.

0:10.2

But it doesn't, to me the story doesn't really have the power unless you understand that it really happened.

It gets better because it has to get better.

We're all made of human.

Hello and welcome to our little birthday present for you. This is Allison Bechtel in conversation with

0:37.1

Sophie Hagen. Now this is a special episode in a lot of ways. It's not like a usual made-of-human podcast episode because this is more an interview than a chat and this was recorded originally for the Young Vic Theater podcast. I then asked if I could also

0:56.1

release it through my channels because I wanted as many people as many people as

0:59.7

possible to listen to it. Again I have a busy London Road as the background music for this

1:05.4

introduction because I'm not closing my window because it's hot and on the day that

1:09.2

I recorded this with Allison Beckdale it was hot as well. We were recording this in basically a closet, like a

1:16.2

soundproof, a windowless closet. And it was so hot. It was so hot, we had to take several breaks. We had to turn off the lights in case

1:27.6

the light bulb made it slightly warmer. We were both sweating from every single orifice it was and it's and that

1:38.0

so that was one thing that was a tiny bit distracting for obviously for both of

1:41.9

us at the same time Allison had just arrived it

1:43.2

distracting for obviously both of us. At the same time Allison had just arrived from America and she was

1:47.4

quite jet-lagged and at the same time we were talking about Fun Home which is currently at the young Vic in London

1:56.4

which you must go and see immediately. It's absolutely phenomenal and I had just seen it

2:01.8

for the first time. I had only known that it existed for a couple of days, whereas Allison wrote the book that it's based on over a decade ago, and she's had to do interviews about this play for that whole decade.

2:17.6

So she was jet lag, she was hot, she was tired and she had already spoken about this a million times.

2:25.8

So it was, by all means, like a tricky interview for both of us to do.

2:31.5

But she said things that I thought my listeners will absolutely adore that
