And we begin with an out-of-this-world idea gaining traction with scientists.

The project involves building an elevator in space.

It's a concept first floated by a Russian engineer in the late 1800s. Since then

most versions have the cable starting at the equator and running directly to a space station.

But now, two scientists think they've found a better approach.

Instead of the cable stretching skyward from Earth, they're proposing it start at the Moon and hang down.

Astronauts would launch to lower orbit, a space tug would take them to the cable,

and from there they'd elevator to the moon.

The cost would be in the billions but space engineers say it could be up and running in just

12 years.

Residents of the San Francisco Bay Area got a timely reminder that they live in quake country.

A 4.5 magnitude shaker hit about 20 miles outside of the city Monday night, was felt in all nine counties and even as far

away as Lake Tahoe. No injuries were reported and damage was minor. Coincidentally, tomorrow is International Shakeout Day.

Your school might be among the thousands across the U.S. and around the world that will

mark the 30th anniversary of the Bay Area's Loma Prieta earthquake with a preparedness drill.

The message is drop, cover, and hold, meaning drop to the ground, take cover under a desk or table, and hold on until the shaking stops.

In all, more than 22 million people are expected to participate.
