Today is Thursday, October 7, 2021, and we begin with a new high school where students don't

just play basketball during PE, they study it all day long.

At the Earl Monroe, New Renaissance Basketball School in New York, the goal is to prepare

students for a career on and around the court.

Math, science, and English get their time, but the spotlight at the tuition-free charter

school is on coaching, uniform design, analytics, and even broadcast journalism.

As MBA commissioner Adam Silver explained to the freshman class yesterday, for every one

person who makes it as a player, there are 100 or so other career opportunities somewhere

in the basketball business.

For those determined to shoot hoops for a living, the man for whom the school was named

was on hand to offer inspiration.

Paula Fame and former Nick Skard Earl Monroe didn't even start playing the game until he

was 14.

Cash is still king, at least among teens, with the rise in technologies like Apple Pay,

PayPal, and Venmo.

That's the somewhat surprising finding from a recent survey, looking at the lifestyle habits

of 10,000 US teenagers.
