Today is Friday, October 8, 2021, and we begin with NASA intentionally putting itself

on a collision course with an asteroid.

On the day before Thanksgiving, the agency will launch an oven-sized spacecraft into the

path of an incoming rock, hoping the explosive impact will change its course.

It's the first test of DART, which stands for Double Asteroid Redirection Test.

The objective, to find out if knocking an asteroid off-kilter, is an effective way to

protect Earth from potentially dangerous space objects.

The craft will crash into the rock at a speed of 4 miles per second, or 14,000 miles an

hour.

If the scenario sounds familiar, you can thank the 1998 sci-fi movie Armageddon, in which

NASA landed a team on an asteroid to detonate it before it destroys Earth.

But today's DART target poses no threat, and while the launches in November, the crash

won't happen for another 10 months.

By now, someone has gotten the call of a lifetime from Oslo Norway.

Overnight, while most of us were sleeping, the Nobel Committee notified and announced

the winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

It's the last and some might say most prestigious of the six annual awards established by Alfred

Nobel in 1895, to acknowledge work of the greatest benefit to humankind.

Last year's winner was the World Food Program for its efforts to fight global hunger.

This year, there were 329 candidates under consideration for the honor, and it's $1,000,000.
