Saul is always characterized as a man of the flesh and a man of physical strength.

And the weapons he loves to use are the weapons of the Philistines.

And so Philistines are described as holding spears, and later we're going to see Saul described as holding a spear.

He loves to fight with the weapons of the world.

David, however, is overcoming not not just physical enemies, as we're

going to see in the next chapter. He's overcoming spiritual enemies. He's overcoming in...

like you want to say something. No, I'm just happy to be here. All right, great. Guys, last week I thought we were going to talk about 1st Samuel 15 and 16, but I, as I said,

regretted that comment because we only got through 1st Samuel 15.

So today, what we're going to do, because we've got a big chapter coming up next week with

1st Samuel 17, David and Goliath. So this week we're going to talk about only one chapter, 1 Samuel 16, which is the

introduction of David. He's been sort of talked about, but he has not yet been sort of, he's not

explicitly shown up in the text until this chapter today. So remind us, where do we leave off?

Where are we here in the story? What's going on? What happened last week with Saul and Jonathan

and all the rest?

So because of Saul's disobedience, because he refused to put the Amalekites under the ban,

and he is not listening to the voice of the Lord. He's not obeying Deuteronomy 17. The Lord has rejected him as king over Israel. And he's still in the position of king, but Samuel as a prophet has made clear

that the Lord is going to tear the kingdom away from him and give it to somebody who's better than him.

And so the Lord tells Samuel to go to Bethlehem in order to sort of jumpstart this coronation of a new king.
