When we get started, as I said, when we get started here, just a minute,

we'll be picking up in St. Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians chapter 10.

We are smack in the middle of 1st Corinthians now and we could have a little briefer catch-up

I think than last time because we're a little more caught up

we're in the middle of we've just finished a section, I should say,

where St. Paul is talking about the way that we conduct ourselves in the church community.

And his discussion was very relevant to us today because in our modern American society especially

we're very concerned about rights and my rights and I have the right to do this and I have the

right to do that no one else can tell me what to do and we're more focused on our rights and

what we're allowed to do than how our actions affect other people.

And so St. Paul is arguing that in the church, because we're called to love each other, it should be

just the opposite, that we should be willing to give up our own rights, not that we don't have

them, but we should be willing to give them up in order to try to help others and show love for others.

And so if me exercising some right that I have is going to hurt someone else or harm someone else,

then I should be willing to give that up rather than inflict harm.

And in what we just read, he was sort of using himself as an example.
