West Africa, especially francophone West Africa, much in the news because of a series of

coups over these last years, most recently in Niger, trouble for the United States with a

base there, a drone base there. However, before that, Burkina Faso and Central African

Republic and Mali, a nation of 21 million people, spread landlocked between two components,

the Southwest and the Northeast. The Tuarga-Pleep people dominate the Northeast.

There is a government in Bamako in the Southwest that since 2020 has been in the hands of the

military, led by a man named Colonel Gohita, to help me with this story, which is as many moving

parts as you can imagine in the violence of Africa, Europe, and Asia. Bill Rajo, as my colleague and

co-host, he is a senior fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracy, he keeps the

Longwear Journal and his co-editor. At the Longwear Journal, Caleb Weiss, we welcome

aspects of the Giharris, JNIM and ISSP. Let's start with JNIM. You link that to Al-Qaeda,

are they on the march and where are they gaining? Good evening to you, Caleb.

Yeah, good evening, John. Thank you for having me again. Yeah, JNIM or the group for support

of Islam and Muslims is the sort of sub-branch for Al-Qaeda and the Islamic grab in the Sahel.

So it is an official branch of Al-Qaeda, but also an official branch of AQIYAH.
