I will never forget a conversation I had with one of my favorite teaching colleagues

many years ago. She came into my classroom after school one afternoon and just stood there

sort of surveying the chaos of my classroom. I had stacks of student papers lined up along

the floor at the front of the room to keep track of which class period they had come

from. My desk was completely cluttered with pens and piles and lesson plans, scribbled

on sticky notes, and my purse was dumped out on the floor because I'd been searching

for my keys amidst all the mess in there. And I remember her looking around the room

in amazement and probably horror and saying, Rachel, you are such a mystery to me. You

are so organized and competent in so many ways, but you are also a complete disaster.

And we both had a really good laugh about that. She's my really good friend. She's also

the friend that was with me driving once when my gas light came on and she was shocked
