This is a case that came out of Aliso Viejo, California, down south from here,

like between here and San Diego.

It's in Orange County.

And I remember covering this case.

This goes back to 2018, where Stephen Beale, who had been a boyfriend to the owner of this spa, and they had a falling out.

And he was accused of going in there and blowing the spa up, killing the spa up, killing the ex-girlfriend, and injuring two other people. I mean, literally blew the place up killing the ex-girlfriend and injuring two other people.

I mean, literally blew the place up, like you see films where the mafia explodes, storefronts.

And so he got tried for murder.

Fair enough.

The prosecutor said the motive was a crime of passion.

The spa owner had broken up with Beale. The prosecution said Beale was obsessed, sent emails and poems, poems and letters and cards to her. They said her friends had warned her that he was a controlling and possessive man. And they said that Beale not only knew her, but had access to the spa and had the specific skills that would enable him to make a bomb because his hobby was model rockets.

So he has access to and just knew how to put all of this together.

Investigators went to his house and found 130 pounds of pyrotechnic chemicals.

Putting it all together, there's your case.

The jurors couldn't come back with a verdict.

They couldn't reach a verdict.

The judge declared a mistrial, which doesn't happen very often,

and the federal prosecutors are going to retry the case.

And that's scheduled for October. And the reason I bring this up, first of all, it's a the case. And that's scheduled for October.

And the reason I bring this up, first of all, it's a fascinating case.

Second of all, you know, when the feds prosecute someone, they win 95% of the time to have a mistrial under these circumstances meant one of two things.

Number one, the case was pretty sloppy, which I don't believe.
