In the spring of last year, the California Air Resources Board announced a total ban

on the sale of new gasoline-powered cars starting in 2035.

A former Environmental Protection Agency official called the move HUGE, and the New York Times

reported that up to 17 other states could potentially follow in California's footsteps

with mandates of their own.

The state's governor calls it a big, bold step to lowering carbon pollution, which is

a major contributor to climate change.

But industry experts predict that it will be extremely challenging for them to shift

to being able to sell only electric cars in the state.

Researchers are concerned that it will punish people who may not be able to afford electric

cars, which are currently more expensive than gas ones.

Furthermore, electric cars require the development of an extensive network of charging stations.
