Good morning and welcome the Kid News. I'm Tori. It's Tuesday, January 15, 2019.

And we begin with teachers in the nation's second largest school district now on strike.

34,000 educators in Los Angeles walked off the job yesterday morning for the first time in 30 years.

The teachers not only want a bigger paycheck, they also

want more money for counselors, nurses, and librarians. Plus they want smaller

classes. Right now some are bursting at the seams with more than 40 students.

The district has offered pay raises but insists if it gave the teachers everything they

wanted, they go bankrupt. For now the schools will stay open since most of the district

students rely on their school for lunch and many families don't have other

options for child care. But only about 2,500 substitutes and credentialed staff will be on hand to supervise.

It's not known how long the strike will last, and other teacher unions around California

are paying close attention, including Oakland, where teachers could strike later this month.
