There is no sign that Matthew was searching for Jesus or intending to follow him. Therefore, Jesus called Matthew first, only then did Matthew choose to follow Him. No one chooses Christ; he chooses us. When Jesus said, 'Follow me,' his words carried the same divine power that healed the paralyzed man when Jesus told him, ‘Get up and walk.' Christ is the Author of salvation, and his Word is the means of salvation. For the Gospel is “the power of God for salvation” (Romans 1:16). And in Matthew’s case, the call of Christ was an effectual call. He immediately got up and followed Jesus without hesitation or delay.

We are witnessing the birth of a new priesthood. They wear cardigans instead of cassocks, quote Brené Brown instead of the Bible, and dispense diagnoses in place of absolution. And for millions of Americans, they’ve become the final authority on the soul. In just one generation, we’ve gone from 'God save a wretch like me' to 'my therapist says.' The modern language of self-care and self-love have replaced self-denial and love for God. All the while, rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide have climbed—not fallen. The numbers are staggering. Nearly one in five U.S. adults is in therapy. Over 40 million are diagnosed with anxiety. Even children are being trained to identify as mentally ill. But here’s the real crisis: it’s not just that our nation is mentally unwell—it’s that the church is copying the world’s prescriptions. Christians now outsource the care of the soul to secular professionals who deny the soul even exists. Historically, the church called this affliction “melancholy”—a burden of body, yes, but also a trial of the conscience, a grief of the soul. The Puritans didn’t dismiss this pain. But they also never called it neutral. They traced it back to disordered loves, guilty consciences, spiritual darkness—and then pointed people to Christ, not a couch. This morning, Pope Francis, the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, died. Francis was the first Pope from the Society of the Jesuits and the first that was born outside of Europe since the 8th century. Since being elected in 2013, his time as Pope was marked by a strong humanitarian agenda, with an emphasis on climate change, opposition to the death penalty, advocacy for decriminalization of homosexuality, and criticism of anti-immigration policies. He was heavily criticized throughout his time by conservatives both inside and outside the Catholic Church for policies and statements that seemed at odds with the historic and traditional teachings of the church on marriage, homosexuality, immigration, and the death penalty. But now, with Francis’s passing, a new Pope will be elected. Roman Catholicism is still the largest Christian tradition, numbering 1.4 billion adherents to Protestantism’s roughly 800 million. It holds massive amounts of land—over 150 million acres worldwide—and billions of dollars in real estate, stocks, and bonds. In short, it’s not going anywhere. But even with all of its assets, it still sits in a precarious position. The young members of the Roman Catholic Church are shockingly conservative. According to the New York Times in 2024, “In an era of deep divisions in the church, newly ordained [Roman Catholic] priests overwhelmingly lean right in their theology, practices and politics.” Local dioceses are bursting at the seams with young families and conservative men who are fed up with modernity and uninterested in a rock concert at the local megachurch. A trace of love remains.”– Stephen Wolfe, *The Case for Christian Nationalism*, from the chapter “Loving Your Nation.” In recovering honor for our fathers and a sense of national identity, one of the most important things will be to forge a connection to our past. We often speak of this connection in terms of knowledge, values, and history. It is something objective and measurable. But what if we are bound together to our family, our home, and our country in even deeper ways? Traducianism is a historic Christian belief that has been a minority view throughout church history, although it was held by some notable church fathers like Tertullian and Reformers like Luther. Traducianism is the belief that the souls of children are inherited from their parents, like two candles coming together to light another candle. In this view, parents give not just their genetics to their children, but pass on a unique, personal spiritual component as well. In this way, memories, affections, vitality, and other spiritual qualities are passed down through the families and time, shaping each family and nation into a distinct ethnos with its own unique spiritual properties. Even myths and archetypes that we know so well in the West live on in our deepest memories, their details lost to time but their form continually re-presented in our stories, ideas, and even dreams. Traducianism is a compelling framework that offers a Biblical and enchanted view of the world where families, homes, and history are not merely material matter, but have a spiritual connection to everything that came before and are an essential part of our hope for the future. Last year we did an entire livestream on how the Biden administration chose to celebrate Easter, most notably by declaring March 31, Easter, as Transgender Day of Visibility. It was the inauguration of a new religion, but one that in God’s grace appears to have been short lived. A mere year later, with Trump in the office, we got a robust, theological celebration of Easter from the highest office in the land. Not just well wishes or platitudes about God’s love for us, but an assertion of how in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ we have redemption and forgiveness for our sins and the hope of eternal life. Now in the midst of every “we’re so back” is an “it’s so over” moment. This year, while the threat to Easter is certainly not as pronounced and obvious as under the Biden presidency, a new, or perhaps old, plan of the enemy is being run. See, the story of Easter is in part, the story of a rebellious people. In one sense, we are the rebellious people, turning everyone to our own way and needing the death of the spotless lamb of God to atone for our sin. But it also is a historical story, in which Christ came to His own, and His own received Him not. Christ was offered up to death by the Jews, and they have opposed him, the apostles, and mankind ever since. Telling the story of Easter without the sober warning of the destruction awaiting those who reject Christ is not to tell the story of Easter at all. That simple statement that I just made may very soon be very, very costly to confess. This week, Trump also appointed Rabbi Yehuda Kaploun to lead the special envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. The most commonly used definition of antisemitism from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance explicitly asserts that claiming the Jews killed Jesus is antisemitic. This may be the dividing truth of our generation. Will we stand for what the Bible says, including when it is inconvenient and possibly even illegal? Or was all that talk about infallibility, inerrancy, and sufficiency really just talk after all? Nine days ago in Frisco Texas an altercation at a track meet shocked the nation. Austin Metcalf was a promising track and field athlete attending a championship competition when he got into a brief altercation with another athlete, Karmelo Anthony, over a tent. According to witnesses, in a matter of moments after the disagreement started, Karmelo took out a knife from his bag and stabbed Austin Metcalf in the heart. Austin died moments later in his twin brother’s arms. This tragedy reopened the wound and division that has been present for nearly the entirety of our nation’s history. Austin Metcalf is far from the first victim of black on white violence, bringing pressing and relevant questions about law, order, and race to the surface yet again. But as family and community mourn for Austin Metcalf and Karmelo Anthony is being held in jail on a one million dollar bond, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised by the black community for Karmelo Anthony, who they see as a victim in the encounter, despite him confessing to the stabbing. We are at the point where even the unjustified murder of a high schooler cannot be objectively condemned as a terrible tragedy by some sides of the aisle.At a certain point it’s time to say the quiet part out loud. Much credit is given to Constantine for his role in calling together the church at Nicea and helping facilitate the foundational creed of the Christian church. But did you know that a mere 10 years later in 335, at the council of Tyre, Constantine exiled one of the fiercest defenders of the faith at the time: Athanasius? Athanasius remained in exile until Constantine’s death, and was only welcomed back by his son who restored him as a bishop, who then went on to exile him again a year later. Constantine the great also continued to permit the continuation of pagan temples and rituals, and retained the title Pontifex Maximus meaning “great priest of the Roman cults.” Sounds alot like America’s principled pluralism today.Now at first glance these facts are pretty inconvenient for someone who just recently argued that the state has a normative role in correcting the church. If, after all, one of the greatest supposed examples was an emperor who exiled faithful bishops and continued to permit pagan worship then the batting average doesn’t look great. This is to say nothing of the countless martyrs of the Catholic Church, the supposedly terrible Spanish Inquisition and even Martin Luther and other zealous reformers. If the State really is supposed to correct the church in certain matters, why all of the errors and excesses? In AD 324 the controversy over Arianism was dividing Emperor Constantine’s recently-unified Roman Empire. Constantine had converted a mere decade ago and achieved spectacular success on the battlefield over his rival Licinius , but was dismayed to return and find that the religion and church he had come to love to was torn apart with squabbling, division, and dissensions. So what happened? Did the church realize their need for clarity on the divinity of the Son and come together at Nicea because they knew they had to hammer out these doctrines? Did Alexander and Arius sit down willingly for the good of the church? Nope. Instead of the church leading the way, Emperor Constantine issued an imperial summons to the warring bishops of the East and West, demanding they convene at Nicea. The result of that month long council was the Nicene creed, a creed that has stood the test of time and is the foundational confession of practically all Christian traditions 1700 years later. This happened again under Emperor Theodosius I & II at Constantinople and Ephesus, under Marcian at Chalcedon, under Justinian again at Constantinople, and on and on. This pattern plays out again and again and again. The church wars, divides, errs, and even apostatizes, and the means of correction that God uses is often the State. This causes us Americans to bristle and protest but it is undeniable that the bulk of church reform has been initiated, carried out, and completed at the hand of the sovereign. Perhaps for all of our spirituality and airtight systematic theology we have forgotten the ordinary, practical means that God uses to save, purify, and protect his church. Whether it was willingly or unwillingly doesn’t really matter; it’s a huge shake-up for someone as visible as Jeremy. For decades, conservatives have been plagued by an affliction—an almost allergic reaction to power. It’s as if the only way to be truly virtuous is to lose, and to lose gracefully. Political wins are viewed with suspicion, as if governing with authority is somehow unseemly, or worse, un-Christian. But what if that mindset is not just wrong—but harmful?Take a look at Donald Trump. Like him or not, he’s leading a populist resurgence that is centered not just on rhetoric, but on wielding power—on winning. Recently, he made headlines for appearing to defy a court order that would have prevented the deportation of Venezuelan gang members. Then, he took aim at President Biden’s use of an autopen for signing pardons, questioning the validity of those signatures. Predictably, his critics shriek: "Tyranny!" But is it tyranny—or is it the legitimate use of power for the good of the nation?There is a long and deep conservative tradition that supports the responsible use of authority. Edmund Burke warned that power unused is power lost, and that liberty without virtue is the greatest of all evils. Russell Kirk argued that moral order requires strong governance. Sam Francis lambasted the Right for its obsession with losing honorably rather than governing effectively. Even American history is filled with examples of presidents who who defied courts and insisted on doing what they believed was right. Lincoln, FDR, Reagan, even Andrew Jackson understood that sometimes, the law is wrong, and justice demands action. Yet, modern evangelicals often act as if any use of power is suspect, embracing what Francis called the "beautiful loser syndrome"—preferring to be righteous victims rather than victorious defenders of truth and order. But what does Scripture actually say? Joseph wielded power in Egypt to save his people. Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem despite opposition. Even Christ declared, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me."So today, we ask: Is Trump a tyrant, or is he acting within a legitimate and necessary conservative tradition? King Solomon once said that of the writing of parenting books there will be no end. From Shepherding a Child’s Heart to the gospel center movements of the 2010s, there are plenty of books out there on the *theology* or the principles of parenting. But parenting is unique in that the Bible offers little *practical* instruction. Yes it instructs us *what* we are to teach our children. Yes it lays out for us the tools of discipline. But it says little to nothing of all the practicals that make up the day in and day out experience of being a parent. This is also where books on principles or the goals of parenting typically fall short. This is because the goal of parenting is not to follow a formula, be it from the Bible or the newest parenting book, but to learn wisdom. The Bible doesn’t make robots out of parents and children, but gives them the instructions and principles to shape their souls to love and adore the good, the true, and the beautiful. The last six months have been absolute disaster for the political left. Yes, they lost the election. Yes, they have an image problem. The younger generation is shockingly conservative, especially young men. Politically correct language and tone that safeguarded leftist frame for decades is regularly flaunted and mocked, spelling doom for the consensus they rely so heavily on. Support for gay marriage and transgenderism is plummeting. We are looking at the complete and utter implosion of a party.But it wasn’t always this way. Less than three decades ago Democrat President Bill Clinton signed the defense of marriage act, defining marriage as one man and one woman, into law. Hillary Clinton advocated for rapid deportation of criminal illegal aliens in 2008. A picture of Christ on the cross. Two thieves, one on His left, one on His right. A moment of cosmic significance—God Himself atoning for the sins of the world. And yet, according to Rick Warren, this is also…a metaphor for political moderation? That post, now deleted, tried to argue that Jesus died “in the middle” as a sign that Christians should reject both the Left and the Right in modern politics. But that’s not theology—it’s a desperate attempt to baptize political fence-sitting. And it’s part of a broader trend known as Evangelical Third-Wayism—a concept pushed by figures like Tim Keller and, more recently, Gavin Ortlund. The idea is simple: Christians should neither align with the Right nor the Left, but instead carve out a “distinctly biblical” third way. It sounds noble, even wise. But in practice, it functions as a convenient excuse for coddling progressives while selectively condemning the Right. Stephen Wolfe has called this out as nothing more than “sharpshooting”—strategically engaging with culture to present a morally palatable image to coastal elites while never actually challenging the underlying liberalism that dominates our institutions. He’s right. If politics is war by other means, then Third-Wayism is an attempt to negotiate a ceasefire while one side keeps advancing. This past Friday Kash Patel was sworn in as the director of the FBI. In a trend that has picked up steam, Director Patel took his oath of office not on the Bible, but on the Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu scripture. While we’re big fans of Kash Patel cleaning house of the corruption that the FBI has come to embody, what exactly does it say for the future of our still majority Christian nation when our representatives and office holders pledge their allegiance to these United States under the witness of demon gods? Can a house divided stand? Now to be clear, the Constitution states in Article 6 that “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” And unfortunately, the founders, for the most part, literally meant that. Thomas Jefferson, for example, celebrated an amendment in a bill to protect all religions in Virginia that explicitly removed the name of Jesus Christ and wrote that the legislators were intent on protecting “the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mahometan, the Hindoo, and Infidel of every denomination” from any type of discrimination. Expanded religious freedoms like this at the state level prior to ratification of the Constitution in 1788 paved the way for the vague, secular language of our constitution that we know today.So what do we do with this? Perhaps at the time, coming out of intense religious persecution, insistence on complete religious freedom was necessary to stave off the unholy union of church authority wielding the power of the state. But today, with religious pluralism and the decline of the West, what was perhaps once necessary to protect against overzealousness, is now a roadblock. Kash delightedly declared at CPAC that the American Dream is for everyone. But is it? Does the prosperity and opportunities of America belong to the world with all her various cultures and religions? If you've spent any time in Christian Twitter circles over the past few years, you’ve probably come across the name Patriarchy Hannah. With her bold advocacy for traditional femininity, biblical patriarchy, and the "trad-wife" lifestyle, she built a following of nearly 30,000 people and positioned herself as a voice in the online push for Christian homemaking and submission. She claimed to be a devoted wife, married to a contractor named Tony, and a mother to 14 children. Her posts were filled with strong rebukes of modern feminism, encouragements for women to embrace submission, and even some sharp critiques of other Christian women in the public sphere. But as of this past week, everything about Patriarchy Hannah has unraveled. The account has been exposed as a fabrication, run not by a married mother of 14, but by a single, childless woman named Jennifer, a 37-year-old from Arkansas. A deep dive into public records, receipts, and past online activity revealed that her husband Tony doesn’t exist, her family life was invented, and the house she claimed her husband built was actually constructed by a completely unrelated developer. Now, some are celebrating this revelation as proof that the entire online patriarchal movement is built on deception. They argue that "trad" influencers are cosplayers, and that many who follow them are ‘fetishists.’So, what does this all mean? To be sure, Patriarchy Hannah deceived many and has publicly apologized. John Knox’s polemic “The First Blast of the Trumpet against the monstrous regiment of Women” Knox wrote that to promote a woman to bear rule, superiority, dominion or empire above any realm, nation or city is repugnant to nature, insulting to GOD and subversion of good order, equity, and justice. And John Knox, in keeping with the scripture, is exactly right. To promote women to rule as Senators, Presidents, lawyers, generals, and CEO’s isn’t an “agree to disagree” issue, it erodes the bedrock of stability and good order that is necessary for flourishing societies and cannot be tolerated. Nowhere is the truth of Knox’s warning more visibly on display than in today’s “conservative” “Christian” women in leadership. Take Kristan Hawkins, an “anti-abortion” activist and president of Students for Life of America for example. Here’s a woman who has spent her life as a “conservative” in public service defending the unborn. But under just a little bit of scrutiny we discovered this week that she’s a mother who is daily abandoning her own sick and dying children while living high on the hog off a $300k salary from donations. Then, when an abolition bill finally made it to the North Dakota Legislature, Ms. Hawkins and Students for Life vociferously OPPOSED equal protection for unborn children. Christianity in the West has gone from the center of civilization to the margins. Once, it shaped laws, culture, and the moral order. Today, it’s viewed with suspicion—or outright hostility.
