The Summer Lakers were a rough watch for five games or so, but over the last two? A lot more fun! Thursday, the SPL crew won its second straight game, beating the Summer Cavs in a nailbiter. They were led by Dalton Knecht, Bronny James and Colin Castleton. Knecht is the only guy in the group expected to play a regular role on the big club, and he continued to play well. Not perfectly, and you can see some of the holes in his game but when you think about how he'll be used contextually in JJ Redick's offense it's easy to see how Knecht could be successful. Meanwhile, the Lakers are looking for a "big bruising" center, Redick says. That's not Castleton, but last year's two-way signing has overcome a slow start to the summer and has shown this week why he could have some value. Castleton might get pushed around defensively and struggle with quicker, more athletic players, but he's a clever passer and is fundamentally sound. There's a good chance he won't actively screw things up, were the Lakers to play him. Really, his shortcomings emphasize the weaknesses in the group. The Lakers just don't have a guy they feel confident in on a night in, night out basis. And finding that guy? Won't be easy, that's for sure. Finally, Matt George of Locked On Kings joins the show to, after some Kings/Lakers trash talk, provide a scouting report on Lindsey Harding, who was added to Redick's staff this week. The disappointment with missing out on Gary Trent Jr. for a minimum contract continued into Wednesday, at least on the show's YouTube page. Beyond all the contextual reasons why Trent might choose the Bucks over the Lakers -- cleaner fit, bigger role, chemistry with Dame, etc. -- there is a feeling that the Lakers simply can't lure players the way they used to. But is that history actually real, or is it more mythology? Certainly there's a lot of the latter. So what does that mean about how the Lakers have to do stuff? For much of the offseason, the inability of the Lakers to make anything happen with the roster has been a point of frustration for fans. But then again, there were always extenuating circumstances. Contextually, the Lakers either couldn't offer the right role, the right money, or the right role with the right money. They lack trade pieces teams seem to want, which isn't exactly a great defense of the front office but does explain the inactivity. The Lakers also don't have a ton of draft capital to toss around, either. Put it all together, and you get Gary Trent Jr., a quality floor spacer, decent defender and probably the best remaining free agent on the market signing in Milwaukee for the veteran's minimum without the Lakers even seeming to get involved. Of all this offseason's misses, this one probably bothers Lakers fans the most. The Lakers are apparently so boxed in, they can't even make a play for a good player at the lowest possible financial commitment. How did this happen? What can be done about it? They preached patience at the trade deadline, looking towards the summer. Now they're preaching patience in the summer, looking towards the regular season and the deadline. Not ideal. Bronny's contract obviously takes up a spot. Would the Lakers have had the foresight to give the 55th pick a 2-way deal in a non-Bronny year? Finally, Jaylen Brown seemed less-than-impressed with young James so far, getting caught by lipreaders watching him play in Vegas. Brown thinks Bronny will be with the big club all year, because that's what dad wants. This, as opposed to the G-League. Is he right? The US Men's National Team typically has some games in their prep for Olympic competition that give people reason to worry. Monday vs. Australia, they had just that, squeaking by the Aussies by six. People didn't like the results, but if you're just focused on the Lakers, it's harder to complain. Anthony Davis once again had an excellent game in relatively short minutes. 17 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks in only 19 minutes. One again, Davis was making a bit of a statement, one that's positive for him not just because it can help change the conversation around him and the way he's talked about relative to other stars, but there's also real value for Davis in playing like one of the best players on a team filled with the best players. And while most Lakers fans will be holding their breath with every minute he (and LeBron James) is on the floor, as long as he's playing Davis (and by extension, Lakers fans) might as well get the highest level of benefit possible. Should he start? Will he? Don't know, don't particularly care. If he dominates, and plays an important role for a team that wins big, that'll be a good result. Meanwhile, the Summer Lakers continue to struggle. Some of the problem is structural. The Lakers don't have an efficient point guard, and in the context of Summer League play, that lack of on-floor organization can be difficult to overcome. Especially since the Lakers also lack guys who are good shot creators, outside Dalton Knecht, who has been forced into a LOT of tough shots but for the most part looks like a player who could be effective in the role he's expected to play in the regular season. Bronny James? Maxwell Lewis? Colin Castleton? These are all guys seeing different degrees of success (or, more often, non-success) but they're likely not going to contribute this year to the big club. That the Lakers only have one player this summer who we might see in the rotation is worthy of discussion, but doesn't change the reality of what these performances mean vis-a-vis the regular season. As it becomes more likely that the Lakers will head to training camp with the roster as currently constructed, more focus is being put on how new head coach JJ Redick might manage those players. Well, if Anthony Davis and LeBron James are going to play in the Olympics - scaring many Lakers fans in the process - they might as well look good. And man alive, did Davis do just that on Wednesday in Vegas against Team Canada. 10 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and four blocks in only 19 minutes. That's some serious production. So while the nervousness is going to remain until Davis and James return from Paris unscathed (and even then, there will be concern about carryover effects), there is an opportunity for Davis to remind people just how good he is and maybe change some narrative in the process. Because there may not be an NBA star for whom the bar moves around more than AD. It's not that he's infallible. Davis has clunker games (often against specific opposing centers) that can and should be noted. But the guy was a second team All-NBA selection last season, while also landing on the first team All-Defense. That's a feat nobody else in the league managed to pull off. A player who does that is an elite level performer, full stop. And it seems like JJ Redick has a good understanding of how unique Davis is, talking about him not in specific roles or as a type, but as Anthony Davis, a singular player who can anchor a team on both ends of the ball. Hopefully Redick sees players for their individual strengths and weaknesses and adjusts their roles accordingly. If the Lakers are indeed going to (mostly) run it back, they need to do a better job maximizing the talents of each player and scheming away from shortcomings. Can Redick do that? On the one hand, it's obviously an honor to represent your country in the Olympics. You can't begrudge players for taking advantage of the opportunity to play when its given. There is tremendous frustration among Lakers fans about the inactivity in the offseason to this point. That much is clear. But how much has that frustration colored the view of how good the team actually is? The Lakers were a very, very un-fun squad last year. There was a poor vibe around the team for most of the year, and that sucked a lot of life out of things. There were injuries, there was Darvin Ham, and so on. But despite all of it, in the end the Lakers won 47 games, which isn't exactly trash, and there are many who believe that just with better coaching, they could have cracked 50. So if that's the case, is the same roster (subbing Dalton Knecht for Taurean Prince) gonna be trash next season? No question, the Lakers aren't at the top of the West. No question, they'll need some luck in the injury department. But if they get those things, LeBron James may not be wrong when he says the team isn't that far off. They're not there yet, and even with some moves likely don't crack into the elite out West without more good luck. But that's not a trash team, unless you define trash as anything less than a frontline title contender. What's the danger of the Lakers defining it that way? The Lakers would love to improve their standing in the Western Conference, which would likely require figuring out how to drop some of the lesser players on the 15 man roster. Easy enough to dump a guy like Cam Reddish on another team, tossing in a second rounder for their trouble, right? Well, not really. The Lakers don't have a lot of second round picks to give away. While they have one coming in next offseason, they have three of their own going out. Picks matter not just for the ability to take them, but the ability to trade them. He talked about Bronny, and what has been a very, very quiet offseason. James didn't give a full throated defense of the front office, but he didn't fillet them, either. There was a strong, "it is what it is" kind of vibe. LeBron acknowledged that the Lakers at least tried, and certain moves were just beyond their ability to close the deal. So he's smart enough to recognize the challenges of making stuff happen this summer. Doesn't mean he's happy they're in the position they're in, but that's not something he went out of his way to complain. It's his job, he says, to make this group as good as he can. As expected, or at least as expected around these parts, LeBron James signed his new deal with the Lakers on Saturday and left just enough money on the table to keep the Lakers under the threshold for the dreaded second apron, where the NBA makes player transactions incredibly hard to execute. The difference in the contracts isn't massive - just under $3 million on a deal that is now worth $101 million and change, vs. $104 million and change, so no need to pass a hat for the guy - but it's not nothing, either. And by $45,000, it's enough to keep the Lakers in a better spot. What they do with it now? Who knows? The Lakers are still full in terms of roster spots. They're still in a box. It's just that the box is a better box than the alternative. And another big name came off the market Saturday when DeMar DeRozan agreed to a three-year deal with Sacramento worth about $74 million, which put him well out of LA's range (and calls into question whether the Lakers could have moved the right salaries to make this work, anyway. The inevitable happened on Wednesday, as the Lakers and LeBron James agreed to a two year contract for max (or near max -- getting to that in a moment) money, about $104 million. The second year? A player option. So there's a good chance LeBron and the Lakers are right back here next year. It means, first and foremost, that the window LeBron opened by offering to take less money in year one so the Lakers could improve the team by acquiring a higher cost player that might require the full midlevel exception, for example, has likely closed. Well, the Lakers haven't been able to make that happen and don't appear to be in position to make it happen before the end of the free agent moratorium on Saturday. So was LeBron serious when he made the offer? Was it done in good faith? Was it done only with a mind to PR, and trying to manage the fallout of an offseason where, to say the least, the optics could tell a story of a star player getting A LOT of things he wanted? (His preferred coach, his kid on the team, etc.) Are these things mutually exclusive? Now the Lakers must go forward with a very constrained roster, one that will be difficult to manipulate without finding trade partners. Which is a tricky thing given the roster construction. They're also full, which gets to the roster spot taken by Bronny James, who signed his deal today. It is, in most ways, similar to the contracts given to most second rounders at this point, save a more generous buyout for Year 3 than some other players have received. On the other hand, the Lakers, realizing the roster crunch they'd be facing, still gave him a guaranteed deal, rather than a 2-way contract. Not all late second round picks would be afforded that luxury. (Many, yes. All, no.) It's just one reason why the chatter around Bronny isn't likely to dissipate fast, especially if he struggles in Summer League, which kicks off this weekend. Rob Pelinka's window to shop is apparently closing. As expected, the Lakers and LeBron James have come to an agreement for his next deal, and since the Lakers couldn't make a big move, LeBron will be signing for the max, or really, really close to it. Reportedly, the deal is for two years, with a player option in year two (you've seen this structure before). The wrinkle: LeBron reportedly is willing to take a million or two less for this year, because it'll keep the Lakers below the second apron, which not only costs them a lot of money in taxes, etc. but also has a significant impact on avenues the Lakers could take to improve over the course of the season. Second apron teams operate with hands, feet, and everything else tied behind their backs. So we'll see what's next, but the Lakers now do seem set up for a very quiet offseason. There are still potential trades out there, moves at the margins and so on, but until they can clear some roster space, the Lakers are in a bind. Another day, another 24 hours of inaction from the Lakers. No trades, no signings, no nothin'. Not even an assistant coach to start populating JJ Redick's staff. None of this is to say the Lakers aren't trying, or are just killin' time before the regular season starts. Surely they're working the phones, and diligently trying to find some assistant coaches. But for now, nothing is actually happening. Maybe it turns out ok. The offseason is long. The world has a lot of coaches in it, many of whom could be an asset to Redick and the Lakers. But little by little, as the Lakers stack days without making moves, the option tree gets smaller. Golden State hired a couple of assistants on Tuesday. That shrinks the market, and changes its complexion, too. At some point, the Lakers are going to have to get things done. The team needs improving. Maybe Wednesday will be the day. Needless to say, Bronny was the main draw when it comes to questions. Free agency kicked off Sunday, and while it's moving slower than previous seasons—thanks, new CBA—it wasn't without any action. But for the Lakers, the big stuff happened before the opening bell. First, LeBron James opted out of his contract, though with the assumption that he's going to come back. There's no risk now of him leaving (whatever risk there was disappeared once LA took Bronny in the 2nd round), but the wrinkle came in a report from ESPN's Dave McMenamin. James, he writes, is willing to take less money next year if the Lakers can use that money to land an impact player. (The idea would be to give the Lakers the flexibility to use their full mid-level exception, as opposed to the smaller taxpayer version.) So now the ball is in Rob Pelinka's court, because this willingness to take less only lasts until LeBron heads off for his Olympics camp. That's about a week. If nothing happens before then, LeBron presumably signs whatever deal he wants, which would likely be a max, three year contract. Can Pelinka make something happen? It'll be tough. This free agent class doesn't have much depth, and the number of players who would be available for $13 million (about the mid-level) and still make a big impact are limited. As for trades, the Lakers have more options now than they did before, since D'Angelo Russell opted into the final year of his contract. (That's the second bit of big news that came down.) Had Russell opted out, the Lakers would have been far more limited, lacking not just Russell's contract to use in a trade, but also any sort of stability at a critical position. The Lakers need to make moves, because the roster is currently full. All of the one-plus guys from last year—Wood, Reddish, Hayes—opted in, and with the inclusion of Bronny James on the regular roster, the Lakers are full. Particularly after they signed Max Christie to a four year, $32 million deal. Had to be done, but Pelinka is going to have to clear out spots if he's going to make material improvements to the roster. The consensus opinion coming out of the first round of the NBA Draft was that the Lakers picked up, if not a steal of the night, a steal in Tennessee guard/forward Dalton Knecht. The Lakers made some history on Thursday, selecting Bronny James with the 55th pick in the Draft. It was a move that surprised... well, nobody, but does set up the Lakers to have the first father/son combo on the floor in NBA history. That's pretty cool! And a testament to LeBron's longevity in the league. But was it a good pick? In some ways, it's a weird argument. Bronny is an undersized 19-year old drafted largely for his defensive potential. He's a project. It could be a couple years before he would be expected to have any impact in the league. But that's true of most 55th picks, the vast majority of whom never make even a minor impact in the league. James was drafted in line with his pre-draft rankings, so it's not like the Lakers reached. So much of the discussion, then, is really about the Lakers and James Sr., and whether Bronny is being guided into a space that is ultimately not good for him. And yes, there are downsides to being drafted by the Lakers for Bronny, starting with the nepotism-gone-wild charges that will follow him. He'll always be perceived by some as the guy who was drafted to keep his dad around/do his dad a favor. It's up to him to show that's not fair, and it won't be easy. On the other hand, he won't find an organization more dedicated to his development than the Lakers. He will have time and support, probably more than the average 55th pick would get. That's helpful. And yeah, if it reduces the chances of LeBron walking to basically zero, that's good for the Lakers. The Lakers have already had a busy week, and it gets busier today, with Day 1 of the NBA Draft (that's a new thing). With all the talk of player development coming with the hiring of JJ Redick, as well as Rob Pelinka talking Monday about the challenges of making trades in the new CBA, it does seem like a strong possibility that the Lakers use the pick. With that in mind, where should they be focused? On the best player available, regardless of position? Trying to fill a specific need or skill set? Is there a way to align those things in a constructive way, where, say the guys that really do make the most sense happen to fill some positional/roster needs? Like a true wing? A real center? While this draft isn't considered all that impressive at the top, there does seem to be a good amount of depth available, meaning teams like the Lakers who are drafting in the middle might have a better chance to get an impact player than they otherwise might. It's a big year for scouting, because the variance in draft rankings across different teams in the league could be pretty vast. So what should the Lakers do? Last season, the Lakers had opportunities to draft players in the first round that were projected to help an NBA team right away. They had a chance to draft the "lottery guy who falls." They did neither. This year, the same opportunity presented itself, this time with the same player. As names went off the board, University of Tennessee wing Dalton Knecht, one of college basketball's best scorers in his only season with the Volunteers, was still hanging out in the audience. Projected as a lottery pick for most of the last couple months, Knecht was still available when the Lakers made their selection at 17. While nobody was really talking about him as an option—Rob Pelinka said the team had the SEC Player of the Year projected into the top 10—LA jumped at the opportunity. Knecht is a great off-ball offensive player, described by many in the draft as one of the most NBA ready players available. He can score at multiple levels and should be the exact type of offensive player who fits in well with a team anchored by gravity-inducing/attention-demanding players like LeBron James and Anthony Davis. How well he develops defensively is a question, and teams may have passed on Knecht due to his age -- 23 at the start of the season. Young for normal people, old for NBA prospects. That limits his upside, potentially, but the Lakers aren't looking for him to develop into a star, just a high end rotation piece with a valuable skill set. His potential to play right away has far more value than hypothetical upside three or so years down the road. Overall, the Lakers (as you'd expect) say they're thrilled. Certainly the pick will grade out well, just because of the perceived value. But in terms of a pick that makes sense for where the Lakers are, it makes sense, too. The Lakers introduced JJ Redick to the media Monday. It didn't take long to get a feel for why Redick did so well through the interview process. He came off as someone with a definitive world view about basketball, and how it should be played. He had thoughts about his star players, and how he wants to use them. Redick was candid about his lack of experience as a coach, but also refused to call himself inexperienced. So there was some confidence, and some humility. There was also a very, very modern feel that makes it easy to understand why Rob Pelinka was, by all accounts, intrigued from the start with Redick, and why it certainly seemed like this was his job to lose. Pelinka talked about wanting a process that was different. Doing things differently, finding a different approach. Redick represents someone who (at least on the surface) is an outside-the-box hire. And to say both guys speak the language of "modern" would be an understatement. Could there be some spiritual synergy between the sideline and the front office? How might that help? (Or, potentially, hurt?) It was interesting to hear Redick talk about how he wants to use LeBron and Anthony Davis. But most importantly, it was interesting to hear him talk about an understanding that he'll make mistakes, and that he needs to give himself grace in those situations. But it's less about whether Redick has a shot at grace for what will be inevitable growing pains—even the most exceptional coaches learn on the job—than whether the Lakers (and by extension, Lakers Nation) affords it to him. The Lakers are introducing JJ Redick Monday as their next head coach, throwing a big ol' press conference to celebrate. In the end, we finished where we started. JJ Redick—who began the process as the frontrunner, then went back to the front of the line after a brief flirtation with UConn head coach Dan Hurley—agreed to a four-year deal with the Lakers, worth about $8 million a year. So the Lakers got their man to succeed Darvin Ham. There's plenty of intrigue built into this move, whether you're talking about the risk of Redick's total lack of coaching experience or the high end potential many around the NBA, and obviously the Lakers as well, believe Redick possesses. What comes next will be critical. The Lakers are reportedly looking to surround Redick with experience (not surprising) but are operating late in the game to get that done. At least they're ahead of Cleveland and Detroit, teams looking for their own coaches. And, of course, personnel on the floor will be the most consequential factor in all of this. For the Lakers to succeed fast, they need to very carefully align skill sets with Redick's vision... one reason it was so absurd to believe the Lakers were comfortable waiting until post-Draft and even into free agency to get this done. Well, the script writers are at it again. Have we entered PLOT TWIST character? Monty Williams -- the same Monty Williams who was a prime choice for the Lakers a few years back and turned them down before they eventually landed on Frank Vogel -- was let go by Detroit with approximately 11 years and $9 billion left on his contract. So with the process seemingly stalled after what were described by some reports as very good conversations with JJ Redick last weekend, speculation is naturally swirling around Williams. Is he ready to coach again, after being coaxed back to the sidelines by Tom Gores last year? It obviously was an unmitigated disaster, so would bringing him here, in this situation, be even kind of wise? Are the Lakers even interested? Is Redick interested in the Pistons? Because his name, intentionally or not, is/will be linked there. James Borrego, to the extent the Lakers care, could be off the market quickly, and even if the Lakers don't want him, it means Borrego gets a crack at putting a staff together before the next Lakers coach does. With the Finals in our collective rear view mirror (maybe not THAT far in our collective rear view mirror but nonetheless in it), ESPN has it's first edition of the 2024-25, admittedly way too early Power Rankings. Of course, the idea of ranking teams now, when so much is going to change and we are almost literally as far as we'll be bfeore anyone plays ball again, might seem silly. And it is, if you allow yourself to get wrapped up in the rankings aspect of it. It doesn't matter if your team is 1, 2 or 3. Or 7, 8 or 9. What's important is where you stand relative to other contenders, and for the Lakers they're a step behind. Right now that's perception, but it's perception based on tangible stuff. It should help crystallize how far the Lakers are from winning another title. Because the Lakers, even if you think 15 is too low - this is where ESPN put them in their rankings - is still a decent leap behind teams like Denver, Dallas, Minnesota and Oklahoma City. What about Memphis? Sacramento? Those teams were both ranked behind LA. And as long as we're arguing about team placements, what about player placements? Where do Lakers like Austin Reaves and D'Angelo Russell fit into the NBA ecosystem? Top 125? 100? 75? These are critical considerations, because were the team to lose any of the assets they currently have (i.e. Russell signing somwhere else with nothing coming back) they'd be hard pressed to find free agents who would be an upgrade. Yeah, everyone saw. In a series that was about as lacking in drama as a series could have, the Boston Celtics polished off the Dallas Mavericks Monday night to win an 18th NBA title, putting them back ahead of the Lakers for most in league history. And it doesn't take a crackerjack NBA analyst to note that they are in much better position to keep adding to that total than the Lakers. There may be nothing that crystalizes the emphasis Lakers Nation places on titles more than watching the Celtics win one. As Kobe noted, the fear of losing is a much bigger driver than the joy of winning. That doesn't apply in exactly the same way for fans, but tolerance for the current state of things will be a lot lower for a while than it would have been had Dallas won, or some other team kept Boston out of the Finals, or if the path for the Lakers felt more clear. To be fair, the Lakers aren't terrible. But they're at least a step behind multiple teams in the Western Conference, have an aging star in LeBron James, and no obvious path to join the truly elite squads. Does this change anything for how the Lakers approach the offseason? Does it change the level of tolerance fans will have if Boston, as expected, keeps being awesome while the Lakers seem to run in place? JJ Redick was in LA this weekend, meeting with the team for his "most formal" round of interviews yet, via the LA Times. How quickly the Lakers move from here is a matter of debate. On the one hand, it certainly seems like the Lakers are facing a time crunch, with the draft rolling around at the end of the month, and free agency starting soon after. But according to Adrian Wojnarowski, there is some thought that the organization, or at least some in it, are comfortable entering those critical periods without a coach in place. Which seems kinda nutty, but hey, who's to say it's not time to break the mold? Meanwhile, there are real questions as to whether a first time head coach, or in the case of Redick, a first time coach, period, is the way to go. The Dan Hurley Saga is over, sort of. As the postmortem continues on this relatively short but extremely interesting chapter in Lakers history (people still talk about Coach K turning them down 20 years later), there's still the matter of finding the coach for next season. To that end, you'll never guess who is, reportedly, back in front... Or maybe you will. That's JJ Redick. He's set to meet with the Lakers this weekend, and if the Celtics finish off the Mavericks in Game 4, could be in a position to be hired pretty quickly. This is a good space for the Lakers to be in, all things considered, because the disaster scenario would have been to go after Hurley unsuccessfully, but then lose out on Redick (if that's the next choice) or even James Borrego, who is reportedly getting far along for the gig in Cleveland. But the Lakers can now credibly turn to Redick as a second choice behind a "c'mon, it's a no brainer" first option in Hurley, without hurt feelings. As for Hurley, he went on the Dan LeBatard Show (as well as Collin Cowherd) to talk about what went down. A couple days after Dan Hurley turned down the Lakers, the news around the NBA is still very much centered around the fact that Dan Hurley turned down the Lakers. It was going to be a big Monday one way or another, but it went the wrong way for the Lakers. UConn head coach Dan Hurley will remain UConn head coach. He turned down an offer from the Lakers reported to be worth $70 million over six years. That's a lot of money, no doubt, but was it the right offer for this situation? Or even close? Well, the news indeed arrived on Monday, and it wasn't what Lakers fans wanted to hear. Dan Hurley said thanks, but no thanks, to the Lakers, and will remain in Storrs, Connecticut to coach the Huskies. So the Lakers are still without a head coach, except now they have a high profile failure in the headlines. Why did they fail? It's possible that Hurley was never leaving, and was only using the Lakers as leverage. It's possible that the pull from UConn, with a chance for a 3-peat and deep family ties to the east coast, was too much to walk away from. We'll find out today, he says. It's hard to read the tea leaves on the choice to fly back east and then make some sort of announcement today. If you're inclined to think he's staying, you can find good signs in him leaving Los Angeles without a signed contract. The Lakers shocked the NBA world Thursday when the news broke (via Woj) that the Lakers are pursing UConn head coach Dan Hurley for their open head coaching gig. They are, reportedly, ready and willing to pay through the wazoo and commit to a lengthy deal in order to entice Hurley to leave Storrs. They're intrigued by Hurley's ability to develop young players and build a program in response to changing eras in the NBA... in addition to his well-earned reputation for offensive innovation (and a high intensity demeanor). As far as Woj Bombs go, this one was atomic. The Lakers, he says, are targeting and have entered negotiations with UConn head coach Dan Hurley to become their next head coach. This was extremely shocking news, as everyone -- like truly everyone who does reporting on this -- didn't see it coming. All of the attention has been on ESPN's JJ Redick, and to a lesser extent, New Orleans assistant James Borrego. The Athletic's Shams Charania had reported earlier in the week that Redick had become the frontrunner, and that talk of how Redick might staff up. There is still a lot left to do. Connecticut will move mountains to try and keep Hurley in Storrs. And it might work. But Hurley has told his players that this is real, so over the next few days we'll see how things progress. For weeks, the Lakers have been attached to ESPN's JJ Redick as the leading name in their search for a head coach. Nothing has come along to change the idea that the gig is Redick's to lose. Tuesday, that sense only grew stronger, as Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that the Lakers are "zeroing in on (Redick) as the front-runner to be the franchise’s next head coach." Dan Woike of the LA Times essentially corroborated the report. Both say nothing is done yet, and the Lakers, at least in theory, have more work to do before finishing the process. But the pushback against the idea it's essentially Redick's gig barring something weird, was mild to say the least. Even off the record, written on background. So it really does appear that Redick is next in line... so why not just get it done? Why do the Lakers and Redick seem ready and willing to wait until after the Finals? Is that really necessary? And is this a good idea? The process wasn't exactly great, it could be argued, but that doesn't necessarily mean Redick isn't a good candidate, or is significantly worse than the other guys, whether David Adelman, James Borrego, Micah Nori or anyone else on the list. Should Lakers fans be excited by this? Terrified? Is he really the next Pat Riley? Do the Lakers even know what that means, or what qualities actually let that laundry list of wants (A grinder! Lots of response to Monday's show, looking at the relative value of potentially available players like Chicago's Zach LaVine and Washington's Kyle Kuzma, and why raw talent isn't necessarily the best metric to use when deciding who to do after. There's a tricky calculus in play that also involves cost in salary and cost in talent, what's left over after a trade and what holes that trade in theory fills. Can the Lakers make a deal for LaVine that overcomes the major questions about his salary (owed about $130 million over the next three years) even if they can keep the cost in talent low enough? Does Washington jack up the price on Kuz precisely because he doesn't make nearly as much money? (In fact, his contract declines in value going forward, as league revenue is expected to pop.) It's just one reason Rob Pelinka's job isn't easy. Aside from the part about never ever getting fired. More questions, too, about coaching. Austin Reaves, speaking in a conference call to ahead of his appearance in a golf tournament, didn't exactly go out of his way to defend Darvin Ham. He, like the rest of us, wants to see the Lakers bring in a coach with some kind of system. Something they can build with over time. The Lakers are still feeling out that space between stars and depth. Depth and stars. But what about those guys who are big names but may not qualify as either? Like Chicago's Zach LaVine, who seems perpetually on the trade block now, and therefore always rumored to be a future Laker. The Bulls, reportedly, are getting LaVine back out on the market, and doing so at a reduced price. Yes, LaVine is apparently on sale! So how should the Lakers respond? On the one hand, LaVine is (for all his negatives) still a very good player. He's twice made All-Star teams, and if you're willing to look past a completely disastrous 2023-24 season, is a reliable putter upper of numbers. On the other hand, he's not a reliable player of games. The dude is hurt all the time, even before last year. And he's owed 130 million or so over the next three years. That's a lot for a guy with some real imperfections for whom any decline in athleticism would be deadly. So should the Lakers bite? How low would the price have to be? And more importantly, what are the questions the Lakers are asking themselves is they kick the tires on a deal like this one? What problem would they be trying to solve with LaVine? Would they be better off trying to pick up a guy like Kyle Kuzma, who might be available again from the Wizards. Would a return to LA be better? He makes less money, and might—might—provide more defensive versatility in ways the Lakers could use. But he's definitely not the scorer LaVine is, and the days of hoping Kuz blossoms into a legitimate outside shooter are probably over. And while he's a lesser player than some on the market, you can expect Washington to try and extract some value for Kuz because he is on a VERY favorable contract. Earlier this week, we noted an interview done by our friend Trevor Lane of Lakers Nation fame with Taurean Prince in which Prince stated his hope that he's back with the team next season. He also talked about the team more broadly, reflecting on whether he believes they should try to run it back with continuity, or if the team needs big changes to contend. And while he's not exactly an impartial observer (continuity is a vote for bringing him back, after all) the question is legitimate. What kept the Lakers from more success? Are the ingredients there, so with better health, a little more luck and improved coaching, could the Lakers achieve more in a brutal Western Conference? Or do they need a more dramatic overhaul? If it's the latter, does that mean building up depth? Or would that mean getting another star to run with LeBron James and Anthony Davis? Depth might seem like the preferable play, but how do the Lakers do that with the assets they have available? How can they take existing depth and use it to get better players? Can they add without giving up too much stuff? And what problem areas ought to be targeted? Is it the need for a viable center? For a genuine defensive wing?
