Welcome to Episode 263: The Ozark Spooklight. Near the Oklahoma-Missouri border, there is a stretch of approximately 4 miles of isolated countryside known as the Devil’s Promenade. Within the Devil’s Promenade, there are sightings of shadow people, witches, spirits masquerading as animals, and creepy rundown houses hiding the smell of decay. At the end of East 50 Road in the Devil’s Promenade, a paranormal light phenomenon can be seen dancing and playing, as if it is alive. Some say the light has been there since at least the 1800s, others swear they didn’t start seeing it until the 1920s. While its origins remain unclear, the light became so famous that over time it turned into a teenage right of passage: take your date to “Spook Light Road” for a chance to be chased by something supernatural. The strangest part of all? You can still go see it there today between the hours of 10pm and 12am. Iron and scissors were placed under beds for protection from the evil eye. Jewish postpartum beliefs included hanging amulets near laboring mothers to ward off Lilith from entering through windows at night to steal infants from mothers.  Across Scandinavian and Celtic folklore, changelings were of major concern. The fae could steal newborns and replace them with sickly copies.  Across the globe, pregnant women were thought to exist in a dangerous liminal state between worlds. Welcome to Episode 260 of Let's Get Haunted: Iceland's Strangest True Crime Mystery! Two men vanished into the Icelandic winter without a trace. No bodies. No crime scenes. No forensic evidence. And yet six people would eventually confess to murders they may never have committed???? This week, we’re diving into the infamous Guðmundur and Geirfinnur case, better known as The Reykjavik Confessions AKA Iceland’s most disturbing and controversial criminal investigation. What began as two mysterious disappearances in 1974 spiraled into a nightmare of isolation cells, psychological manipulation, alleged coerced confessions, and a national obsession that destroyed lives. Under immense pressure to solve the case, Icelandic police subjected suspects to hundreds of hours of interrogation, prolonged solitary confinement, sleep deprivation, and heavy sedation. Some prisoners became so psychologically broken they no longer trusted their own memories. Decades later, many Icelanders came to believe the confessions were entirely false — and in 2018, five of the six convictions were finally overturned by Iceland’s Supreme Court! At the bottom of the globe, between the southernmost tip of Chile and the northernmost islands of Antarctica, lies a treacherous stretch of ocean that has claimed the lives of thousands of sailors. With waves up to 65 feet high and winds clocking in at 70 miles per hour, the violence of the Drake Passage can only be successfully navigated by the most experienced of ship captains. Beneath these churning blue-green waters, there are an estimated 800 hidden shipwrecks filled with forgotten treasures and floating skeletons, cursed to remain in this dark and frigid purgatory for the rest of time. Above the waves, unlucky sailors passing through the area must fight to stay alive as their ships rock violently against rogue waves, unpredictable currents, and howling tempests.
