Timescapes Make Dark Energy Irrelevant! (ft. David Wiltshire) [Ep. 500]

What if everything we know about the universe’s expansion is wrong? David Wiltshire offers a radical perspective on cosmic acceleration and dark energy, proposing that both might be illusions created by the varying passage of time in different regions of the universe. Wiltshire challenges the foundations of modern cosmology with his innovative Timescape model. We discuss the foundations of Einstein's theory of relativity, examining how time behaves differently in regions of high and low matter density. Wiltshire explains how this could alter our understanding of the universe’s expansion, potentially eliminating the need for dark energy altogether. His work revisits Mark’s Principle and its influence on cosmology, offering an alternative explanation for cosmic phenomena. This episode will captivate anyone interested in the future of cosmological theory, the mystery of dark energy, and the complex nature of time. NEW Dark Energy Data Surprises Scientists (ft. Kyle Dawson)

Is everything we thought we knew about the universe… wrong? Lambda-CDM model nearing its breaking point? Could dark energy actually be evolving? In this episode of Into the Impossible, I’m joined by Kyle Dawson and Daniel Green to discuss the latest data from the DESI experiment. These new results are making headlines, and rightfully so, as they hold the potential to transform our understanding of the universe completely.  Kyle Dawson, a key figure in the DESI project and professor at the University of Utah, explains the findings from DESI’s second data release. Together with Daniel Green from the University of California, San Diego, we dig into how fresh observations of dark energy, baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), and cosmic expansion are revealing cracks in the standard model. Eric Weinstein's Theory of Everything Confirmed?

How are recent DESI experimental results challenging the traditional view of dark energy as a fixed cosmological constant? Are foundational assumptions in Einstein’s general relativity limiting progress in theoretical physics? And how do tensions in cosmological measurements, like the Hubble constant discrepancy, reflect deeper issues in physics? In this episode, we’ll explore these fundamental questions with none other than Eric Weinstein! Eric is one of the most revered thinkers of our generation. Though not an academic physicist, he proposed a unified theory of physics in 2013, which is supposed to have the potential to explain phenomena that string theory cannot. In a lecture held live at UCSD in April 2025 at the prestigious Astrophysics and Cosmology Seminar, Eric presented an update to his groundbreaking theory. Today, we’ll discuss his fascinating theory, the future of physics and academia, and much more.  Eric is an investor, financial executive, and host of The Portal. He and his brother, Bret Weinstein, coined the term Intellectual Dark Web to refer to an informal group of pundits. Eric is a vocal critic of modern academic hierarchies and advocates for advances in scientific theory over an emphasis on experimental results. He proposed a new unified theory of physics in 2013 and has been an active member of the physics community since then.  — Please join my mailing list here 👉 https://briankeating.com/list to win a meteorite 💥 — Key Takeaways:  00:00:00 Intro  00:00:29 DESI results and the cosmological constant  00:08:33 Why general relativity is fundamentally limited 00:16:11 Elon Musk’s obsession with Mars 00:26:01 Sharing ideas with broader audiences  00:30:56 Dark energy’s evolving nature 00:34:16 Discrepancies in cosmological measurements 00:43:02 Freeing dark energy from constancy  00:50:16 Einstein’s happiest thought, LLMs and physics  00:59:09 Eric’s thoughts on Lenny Susskind, Joe Rogan, and Terrence Howard 01:04:44 Pseudoscience and the debunking community  01:23:55 The future of academia and academic freedom  01:48:45 Political polarization in the United States 01:56:43 October 7th  02:00:50 Remembering Jim Simons and Chern-Simons theory  02:21:10 Outro — Additional resources:  ➡️ Learn more about Eric: 🎙️ Website: https://ericweinstein.org/ ➡️ Follow me on your fav platforms: ✖️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating  🔔 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1  📝 Join my mailing list: https://briankeating.com/list  ✍️ Check out my blog: https://briankeating.com/cosmic-musings/  🎙️ Follow my podcast: https://briankeating.com/podcast  — Into the Impossible with Brian Keating is a podcast dedicated to all those who want to explore the universe within and beyond the known. The Scientists: The Giving Valve (inspired by Richard Dawkins' Selfish Gene)

Please join my mailing list here 👉 https://briankeating.com/list to win a meteorite 💥 In this special bonus audio essay, Brian shares personal reflections inspired by his recent experience hosting evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins on the final North American stop of Dawkins' legendary speaking tour. After a career filled with interviewing Nobel laureates and deep thinkers—from Sam Harris to Peter Thiel's Venice conferences—Brian turns inward to explore a fresh idea: the "giving valve." Drawing on Dawkins' groundbreaking work "The Selfish Gene" and the concept of genetic legacy, Brian challenges us to look beyond biology and consider what truly endures when we’re gone: our values. Is passing on knowledge or wisdom more significant than our genetic code? How do our choices, beliefs, and ethical frameworks shape the future long after our genes are forgotten? Brian blends personal anecdotes, thoughtful musings, and lessons from philosophy and faith to make a compelling case for prioritizing the transmission of meaning over mere survival.Whether you’re fascinated by science, philosophy, or what it means to leave a lasting impact, this episode sets the stage for a heartfelt conversation—and a deep dive into what really makes us human. -  Key Takeaways: 00:00 "Comparing Dawkins and Clavin Experiences" 03:45 Intellectual Gatherings Funded by Peter Thiel 07:22 Professor's Perspective: Podcasting & Preparation 11:31 "Knowledge vs. Wisdom Exploration" 16:50 Two Contrasting Adams Explained 19:11 Immortal Legacy Through Contribution 23:45 Legacy Beyond Biology 25:21 "Passing Down Our Values" -   Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmXH_moPhfkqCk6S3b9RWuw/join Get a copy of my books: Think Like a Nobel Prize Winner, with life changing interviews with 9 Nobel Prizewinners: https://a.co/d/03ezQFu My tell-all cosmic memoir Losing the Nobel Prize: http://amzn.to/2sa5UpA The first-ever audiobook from Galileo: Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems: Ptolemaic and Copernican https://a.co/d/iZPi9Un   📺 Watch my most popular videos:📺 Neil Turok https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dt5cFLN65fI Frank Wilczek https://youtu.be/3z8RqKMQHe0?sub_confirmation=1 Eric Weinstein vs. Stephen Wolfram https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI0AZ4Y4Ip4?sub_confirmation=1 Sir Roger Penrose: https://youtu.be/AMuqyAvX7Wo Sabine Hossenfelder: https://youtu.be/g00ilS6tBvs Avi Loeb: https://youtu.be/N9lUceHsLRw   Follow me to ask questions of my guests: 🏄‍♂️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating 🔔 Subscribe https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1 📝 Join my mailing list; just click here http://briankeating.com/list ✍️ Detailed Blog posts here: https://briankeating.com/blog 🎙️ Listen on audio-only platforms: https://briankeating.com/podcast #universe #podcast #briankeating #intotheimpossible #science #astronomy #cosmology #cosmicmicrowavebackground #intotheimpossible #briankeating Learn more about your ad choices. Astrobiologist Says We’ve Been Searching for Aliens the Wrong Way with Nathalie Cabrol [Ep. 495]

Please join my mailing list here 👉 https://briankeating.com/list to win a meteorite 💥 What if alien life is everywhere, but we’ve been looking for it in all the wrong places? We assume life needs water, carbon, a warm little pond—just like Darwin said. But what if life doesn't care about what we assume to be necessary? Today, we’re joined by Dr. Nathalie Cabrol, director of the Carl Sagan Center at the SETI Institute. Cabrol has spent her career exploring Earth’s most extreme environments—boiling lakes that freeze at night, toxic salt flats, and places where life should be impossible. And yet, it finds a way. In this episode, we talk about the intricacies of the search for extraterrestrial life and question whether Earth might be a cosmic accident after all. We explore whether civilizations out there may stay silent on purpose—and what it would take for humanity to survive its own future, based on what we know about the deep secrets of the universe. — Key Takeaways:  00:00:00 Intro 00:01:55 What is life?  00:05:17 Exploring extreme environments  00:08:51 Agnostic biosignatures 00:13:57 Judging a book by its cover  00:17:33 The shadow biosphere 00:22:27 Errors in the search for extraterrestrial life  00:37:31 The Rare Earth Hypothesis  00:40:41 Should we stop broadcasting our location? 00:52:00 The impact of discovering extraterrestrial life  01:00:06 Are we worth saving?  01:06:46 Outro — Additional resources:  ➡️ Learn more about Nathalie Cabrol: 🛸 SETI Institute: https://www.seti.org/our-scientists/nathalie-cabrol  📚 The Secret Life of the Universe: https://a.co/d/dzdzcD9 ➡️ Follow me on your fav platforms: ✖️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating  🔔 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1  📝 Join my mailing list: https://briankeating.com/list  ✍️ Check out my blog: https://briankeating.com/cosmic-musings/  🎙️ Follow my podcast: https://briankeating.com/podcast  — Into the Impossible with Brian Keating is a podcast dedicated to all those who want to explore the universe within and beyond the known. Did Eric Weinstein Just Delete Einstein’s Cosmological Constant - Confirmed by DESI? [Ep. 493]

Please join my mailing list here 👉 https://briankeating.com/list to win a meteorite 💥 Can geometric unity actually solve the deepest mysteries of our universe, or will it join the many others that have tried unsuccessfully in the past to create a new unified theory? Eric Weinstein is one of the most revered thinkers of our generation. Today, we’re sharing his fascinating lecture with you! He proposed a new unified theory of physics in 2013 and has been an active member of the physics community.  — Key Takeaways:  00:00 Intro 01:58 Cosmological sector and geometric unity  03:57 The Poincaré group  08:31 Quantum gravity and the standard model  14:41 Torsion and gauge invariance  28:13 Spinor group and 14-dimensional space  38:24 Grand unification and spinors  42:34 The Higgs is an illusion 50:08 Outro — Additional resources:  ➡️ Learn more about Eric: 🎙️ Website: https://ericweinstein.org/ ➡️ Follow me on your fav platforms: ✖️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating  🔔 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1  📝 Join my mailing list: https://briankeating.com/list  ✍️ Check out my blog: https://briankeating.com/cosmic-musings/  🎙️ Follow my podcast: https://briankeating.com/podcast  — Into the Impossible with Brian Keating is a podcast dedicated to all those who want to explore the universe within and beyond the known. How Black Holes Break Reality | Marcus Chown

Please join my mailing list here 👉 https://briankeating.com/list to win a meteorite 💥 Could a black hole erase your past? Wipe out every memory, every detail, that makes you who you are? That’s just one of the crazy questions we explore as we encounter the insane paradoxes of black holes.  Black holes don’t just trap matter. They trap information too. This is what makes them one of the greatest mysteries of our universe. They challenge our fundamental understanding of physics and our reality. Everything we know about our world breaks down when we confront their mystifying properties. Today's guest, Marcus Chown, has spent years tracing the history of black holes—not just the science, but also the brilliant scientists who gave us the knowledge and insight into these marvels. From equations scribbled in the trenches of WWI to a vanishing dark star in the 1970s, Marcus takes us on a journey from discovery to understanding…of all that we know so far. His latest book, A Crack in Everything, tells the astonishing story of how black holes went from absurd fantasy to perhaps the fundamental phenomenon that shapes our entire reality. — Key Takeaways:  00:00:00 Intro 00:01:09 The most terrifying object in the universe 00:03:05 Judging a book by its cover  00:05:10 Paradoxes and information in black holes  00:10:26 Historical figures and black holes 00:23:23 The future of black hole research  00:34:44 Are black holes responsible for our existence? 00:38:53 Do black holes create universes?  00:44:06 Human stories that didn’t make it into the book  00:59:37 Outro — Additional resources:  ➡️ Learn more about Marcus Chown:  📚 A Crack in Everything: https://a.co/d/5KI9iZK ➡️ Follow me on your fav platforms: ✖️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating  🔔 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1  📝 Join my mailing list: https://briankeating.com/list  ✍️ Check out my blog: https://briankeating.com/cosmic-musings/  🎙️ Follow my podcast: https://briankeating.com/podcast  — Into the Impossible with Brian Keating is a podcast dedicated to all those who want to explore the universe within and beyond the known. Can the West Survive? Douglas Murray

Please join my mailing list here 👉 https://briankeating.com/list to win a meteorite 💥 What happens when a civilization begins to doubt its own foundations, dismissing facts, evidence, and even reason for not being woke enough? In an age where biology, history, warfare, and even science are increasingly shaped by ideology, what does it mean to defend truth at all? Douglas Murray, one of the most influential public intellectuals worldwide, has spent his career warning us that the West is in trouble, not because of external threats, but because we ourselves have begun to question the values that built our ideals, our history, our culture, our civilization, and our sense of identity. His latest work, “On Democracies and Death Cults,” which we’ll discuss today, applies this warning to one of the most politically and morally charged conflicts of all time. It also leads us into the fundamental question of the very purpose of Western civilization. At its core, Douglas Murray’s work explores a universal issue: the battle over what counts as truth. From journalism to biology, we continue to return to the most profound question: how do we guard and protect our most sacred truths in a world that no longer agrees on what reality itself is? — Key Takeaways:  00:00 Intro 01:25 My trip to Israel and death cults  06:09 Judging a book by its cover 12:35 Academic institutions and political activism  28:27 The impact of projection and guilt 34:46 Science, progress, and Western civilization  48:39 The possibility of peace in the Middle East  53:31 How to find courage  55:41 Outro — Additional resources:  ➡️ Learn more about Douglas Murray: 📚 On Democracies and Death Cults: https://a.co/d/c7y845h 💻 Website: https://douglasmurray.net/ ➡️ Follow me on your fav platforms: ✖️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating  🔔 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1  📝 Join my mailing list: https://briankeating.com/list  ✍️ Check out my blog: https://briankeating.com/cosmic-musings/  🎙️ Follow my podcast: https://briankeating.com/podcast  — Into the Impossible with Brian Keating is a podcast dedicated to all those who want to explore the universe within and beyond the known. Consensus is the AI powered results engine I use every day in my research. Visit https://bit.ly/ConsensusApp and sign up for one year for *FREE* with code KEATING25 just for listeners of The INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE Podcast! What if the best person to solve the mystery of alien communication isn't a SETI researcher or a radio astronomer, but instead a theoretical physicist trained in the deepest notions of physical law, symmetries, and quantum field theory? Well, today, I’m joined by Latham Boyle, a renowned theoretical physicist exploring the fundamental symmetries of the universe and developing new ideas to understand how the universe began. But his research goes beyond that—he’s also tackling one of the greatest mysteries of all time: the Fermi Paradox. After explaining everything we need to know about symmetries, Latham shares his bold theory of a mirror universe, where the cosmos is symmetric across the Big Bang, and how that could explain the strange silence from the stars. We explore how this radical idea might reshape our understanding of dark matter, the origin of the universe, and why advanced civilizations might be using quantum signals we’re simply not equipped to detect. What if we’re not alone, just looking in the wrong way? — Key Takeaways:  00:00 Intro  02:29 Explaining symmetries and CPT symmetry  05:07 Theoretical framework and observational evidence  09:49 Symmetry violations  12:56 Possible alternative explanation of the early universe  40:55 Quantum entanglement and the Fermi Paradox  51:14 Technology of biological material?  56:29 Outro — Additional resources:  ➡️ Follow me on your fav platforms: ✖️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating  🔔 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1  📝 Join my mailing list: https://briankeating.com/list  ✍️ Check out my blog: https://briankeating.com/cosmic-musings/  🎙️ Follow my podcast: https://briankeating.com/podcast  — Into the Impossible with Brian Keating is a podcast dedicated to all those who want to explore the universe within and beyond the known. Are humans and AI truly separate, or are we actually co-evolving? And how did we end up building a megastructure that’s quietly reshaping governance, knowledge, and power on a planetary scale? Here to shed light on our evolving technological reality is Ben Bratton, philosopher of technology and professor at UCSD. Ben is the Director of Antikythera, a research program at the Berggruen Institute focused on the future of planetary computation. The program explores five core areas: planetary computation, synthetic intelligence, recursive simulations, hemispherical stacks, and planetary sapience. He is also the author of The Stack, a groundbreaking book that introduced the term “planetary computation” and mapped its political, social, and philosophical implications. In our wide-ranging conversation, Ben explains how computation has evolved far beyond servers and algorithms to become an organizing force of the planet itself. We also dive into the future of AGI, the ethics of machine valence, terraforming Earth as a philosophical imperative, non-biological life, and how speculative design and planetary sapience might reframe humanity’s role in the cosmos. — Key Takeaways:  00:00 Intro  01:02 Antikythera and planetary computation  07:50 AI and the limits of computation  18:04 Terraforming and the future of humanity  19:55 The role of language in AI  31:01 Planetary data centers and future energy needs 34:00 Techno signatures  39:10 Science and philosophy  41:09 The Stack: On Software and Sovereignty 45:52 Outro — Additional resources:  ➡️ Learn more about Ben Bratton:  💻 Website: https://bratton.info/  📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/benjaminbratton  ✖️ X: https://x.com/bratton  📚 The Stack: https://amzn.eu/d/j80ENZW ➡️ Follow me on your fav platforms: ✖️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating  🔔 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1  📝 Join my mailing list: https://briankeating.com/list  ✍️ Check out my blog: https://briankeating.com/cosmic-musings/  🎙️ Follow my podcast: https://briankeating.com/podcast  — Into the Impossible with Brian Keating is a podcast dedicated to all those who want to explore the universe within and beyond the known. Just go to http://piquelife.com/impossible Please join my mailing list here 👉 https://briankeating.com/list to win a meteorite 💥 Is the Big Bang theory dead?  Eric Lerner has been pushing plasma cosmology and denying the Big Bang theory for decades. His latest claim is that the Big Bang theory is dead because of an alleged discreptancy in the abundance of lithium in the universe. But are his arguments against the Big Bang credible? Does the lithium abundance discrepancy disprove the Big Bang theory? And how should we approach anomalies in scientific theories? In this episode, I break down how his claims, particularly around lithium abundance, are based on a misunderstanding of science. Rather than debunking the Big Bang, these anomalies present an opportunity for further discovery. I also discuss the broader implications of Lerner's arguments, placing them within the context of conspiracy theories in science, and make my case for the ongoing validity of the Big Bang theory. — Key Takeaways:  00:00 Lerner’s Big Bang denial claims   02:26 Light element abundance  03:51 Challenging Lernere’s lithium argument  22:37 Lerner’s alternative model and cherry-picking  34:45 Science denial  36:05 Outro — Additional resources:  Relevant sources:  📝 Coc et al. Why is there a growing distrust in science? And has theoretical physics been intentionally sidelined to limit major breakthroughs?  Here today to discuss the rise of anti-science are Avi Loeb and Eric Weinstein!  Avi Loeb is a leading astrophysicist, professor at Harvard University, director of the Galileo Project, and founding director of Harvard’s Black Hole Initiative. Known as the alien hunter, he became famous for his bold and sometimes controversial theories about UFOs and extraterrestrial intelligence.  Eric Weinstein is an investor, financial executive and host of The Portal. Though not an academic physicist, he proposed a unified theory of physics in 2013. He and his brother Bret Weinstein coined the term Intellectual Dark Web to refer to an informal group of pundits. Eric is a vocal critic of modern academic hierarchies and advocates for advances in scientific theory over an emphasis on experimental results. Historically, SETI has focused primarily on radio waves because they can travel vast distances through interstellar gas and dust with minimal absorption and require less energy to transmit compared to other wavelengths. This approach dates back to the 1960s, when astronomer Frank Drake conducted the first modern SETI experiment, Project Ozma. However, in recent years, optical SETI and infrared SETI have started to gain traction. Here today to tell us everything about this new era of SETI is the remarkable observational and experimental astrophysicist Shelley Wright! Shelley is a Professor of Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Physics at UCSD. She specializes in designing and using astronomical instruments that make use of adaptive optics, with a particular focus on techniques involving integral field spectrographs. As a SETI researcher and instrumentalist, there is no one better to shed light on this topic than her!
