Once I found my creative niche, my photography and in many ways my life, it came into much sharper focus.

The difference was dramatic.

Suddenly I went from wandering in the woods to sprinting like a track star.

I at that time dropped out of graduate school.

I went from my first few local clients in photography to working with some of the biggest

sports brands in the world. And before I knew it, I was doing huge major photo shoots

with renowned celebrities and athletes in remote locations of astonishing beauty all over the globe.

And what made it possible was focus.

The more you narrow your creative focus, the faster you'll learn and the more effective your work will become. Think about your favorite

artists and entrepreneurs, right? They do lots of different things now that they have the freedom

to do so. But if you ask the question, how did you stand out in the first place? They would all say

through a very focused approach, zero in on your focus. Remember, you cannot

boil the ocean no matter what you're creative calling. Breath is helpful when you're exploring,

but chances are you're great at one thing and maybe, I guess, a few others.

You're probably lousy at five or more.

So focus is where you're going to find the traction.

Four good photographs beats a mix of three great ones, three mediocre ones, and one stinker in any portfolio.

To the outside observer, those negatives, those things that are just a little off, they substantially

outweigh the positives. They stand out. We have a negativity bias. So the same thing ought to be on your mind when you're thinking about your focus.

How can you focus your life as if it were your portfolio? How can you focus on your winners?

Once your intuition tells you that you're moving in the right direction, focus ruthlessly.

Zero in.
