Hello, this is the Webbox Podcast. I'm Matt Chowly coming up on today's episode. Everyone

0:10.5

is talking about Vladimir Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, but how much you actually know

0:15.8

about it and what we thought we'd do is take a look at the man who's become a 21st century

0:20.3

war here, appearing in t-shirts on social media, vowing to remain in Kiev despite the Russian

0:27.0

onslaught. So we've got a fascinating profile coming up on the podcast today. Before that, as

0:32.0

ever we kick off with our economy's panel on a Monday, it is Liberacee. It's Libby Purvis and

0:36.7

Rachel Vester. Let's start with this question of exactly how generous Britain should be in its

0:47.2

offer to Ukrainians seeking sanctuary from the Russian invasion. Libby, you'll take on this first

0:56.0

of all. The government clearly faced a lot of criticism, not least, Kevin Foster's suggestion that

1:01.6

they might be able to come under the seasonal worker scheme to pick fruit. What do you think the UK

1:06.9

government should be doing? I think a great deal of generosity is called for here. It was an

1:13.7

extraordinary suggestion that all Ukrainians are fit for is to pick the potatoes or whatever,

1:19.2

it's just absurd. It's a sophisticated country, people of all trades, people who could contribute,

1:24.8

and also do remember, people who, if this gets resolved and pray God it is and Putin's regime falls,

1:31.2

if this is all resolved in the end and Ukraine is a peaceful, decent country, again, people will go

1:36.5

back just as the polls have gone back in enormous numbers. I always thought they would. I had a young

1:42.3

Polish friend who came here when they were first allowed to, and it was always quite clear. She loved

1:47.5

Poland. She loved her country. She wanted to go back. So give people sanctuary while they need it for

1:53.2

heaven's sake and treat them with the respect that their own quality, their own professional abilities

1:59.3

deserve. You know, once you start on the fruit and potato picking thing, you know, you really are

2:04.4

sort of almost racist. I suppose that's the thing, isn't it Rachel? It feels like the government

2:11.7

is still in sort of vote leave campaign mode. It's not really rising to the occasion.
