Hello from CNN. I'm Joe Beck, with the five things you need to know for Friday, February 28th.

After weeks of growing tension, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy is expected to sit down

with President Donald Trump this morning.

He's visiting the White House to sign a deal that would give the U.S. access to Ukrainian

earth minerals. But it comes as Trump has continued to talk with and praise Russian President Vladimir Putin

while shutting Ukraine out of negotiations to end the war.

I asked CNN's Kevin Liptack, what Zelensky is hoping to get out of this meeting?

Joe, President Zelensky is here essentially to plead Ukraine's case to a counterpart, who at best

has been skeptical, but at worst has been openly hostile to him, so the stakes could not be higher.

At the center of this meeting is this minerals deal that the president and Zelensky will sign.

Trump has framed this as essentially back payment for past U.S. support to Ukraine, but it doesn't contain

any future commitments, financial or otherwise. It doesn't contain any security guarantees.

And so when Zelensky is here at the White House today, he's going to want to talk to Trump

about how exactly the U.S. will support Ukraine going forward.

The Trump administration is continuing on its government shrinking mission, and its latest

target is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
