Ukrainian president Volomir Zelensky is the third foreign leader this week to court President Donald Trump with a visit at the White House today. The two leaders want to get closer to ending Russia's war in Ukraine.

On the table today is a rare earth mineral deal that Trump says they'll sign.

Zelensky, though, wants U.S. security guarantees against Russia, something Trump says he thinks

likely won't be necessary because he trusts Moscow to keep its word.

So why does Trump want Ukraine's minerals?

And what's the catch?

Let's ask CNN's bill weir.

Krista, there could be vast reserves of titanium in Ukraine.

These strong light metal used to make fighter jets, along with much smaller pockets of lithium,

nickel, cobalts, and rare earth minerals, all vital for the world's electrified future.

But a lot of these reserves are now behind Russian lines and all of them are unproven.

So even with the deal, investors will have to spend hundreds of millions of dollars in many

years just building the power plants and infrastructure before a single ounce of lithium or

rare earth is ever mined.

There's some mixed news about the economy today.

The Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge cooled last month, but consumer spending was down by the most it's been in nearly four years.
