Nancy DeMoss Volgamuth says when a woman becomes a mother, a very special bond is formed.

And there's something in that mother's heart that just loves that child that yearns with compassion.

Do you moms know what I'm talking about?

That is the heart of God, the tender mercy of God.

That's the kind of compassion God has toward His people.

What is it that makes people more generous and more compassionate at Christmas time?

Maybe we're all just responding to the incredible compassion of God that we see in the gift

he gave us.

Nancy's going to reflect on that compassion as she continues in a series called

Zachariah's Him.

We come today in our study of Zachariah's Him,

Zachariah's Benediction or or blessing in Luke chapter 1,

we come today to one of my very favorite phrases and one that has come to mean a whole lot more to me

since I've been involved in this study. Remember that the scene here is the birth of John the Baptist?

He wasn't called the Baptist then, but we came to call him that later, but the son of Zachariah and Elizabeth, and Zachariah is blessing the Lord for visiting and redeeming his people in the form of Christ who was soon to be born.

And then looked at his eight-day-old son, John, and said, you, child, will be called the prophet of the most high, you will go before the

Lord to prepare his ways to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their

sins. And then we come to verse 78 because of the tender mercy of our God. Because of the tender mercy of our God.

Because of the tender mercy of our God.

Now, this is the first place in the Gospels where this word appears.
