And today we have with us someone I have known for a very long time, having first met her when we were both graduate students at the very end of 1980s at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

From the jump, this woman was self-evidently destined for big things,

almost as self-evidently as I was headed for a jail cell.

Somehow, some way, however inexplicably,

I managed to dodge the fate, written to the stars for me,

whereas Zanny Mittenbadows very quickly began her rocket ride to glory.

Immediately after finishing her study, she went to work for the famed economist Jeffrey Sachs.

As part of a small team advising the finance minister of Poland, as that country made its transition to capitalism,

then spent a couple of years working for the IMF on macroeconomic adjustment programs in central and eastern Europe, as well as Africa.

Then in 1994, Zani and I found ourselves again under the same roof when she joined the Economist magazine

as its emerging markets correspondent. And while I soon left those Howard Halls, Zanee not only

stuck around, but began a rapid assent to economics editor just two years

later, then business affairs editor a little while after that, and finally, to the top of
